My old Sony CDP is starting to have trouble reading the TOC when a disk is inserted. I sometimes have to lift it and jostle the CD into position, and then it plays. Is this the death knell of a classy old player?

Could it be dusty inside?

I hear ya, but I'd kinda hate having to junk an X779ES.

Have you tried cleaning the lens? I had a boombox which was acting up in the same way you mention, I believe I even used one of those cleaning CDs with the brush(es) un the underside but it didn't do anything.

You might have to open it up for this but what I did was to very carefully clean the lens (you'll know it when you see it) with a cotton swab and alcohol. Worked like a charm.

Just be careful not to press down on the lens. And do this with the unit unplugged unless you want to perform eye surgery on yourself .

Best,

Damián

Moby, get that 779 working again. It will thrash probably all of the "universal" players on CD, and its CD performance will better the SACD and DVD-A performance of most universal players.

I had a Sony changer that did this. It was the servo that guides the laser assembly.
