View Full Version : LP player question - good cartridge, mediocre turntable?

I have this nagging question...

My turntable (old Technics) is, quite frankly on the verge of destruction. It suffered through too much abuse, and now the weight clamp can't hold its weight, the arm joint is worn out and wobbly, and the speed control... well, it isn't.

On a side note, my grandmother is thinking about throwing away her old Sony setup. About time, too - the thing is on the verge of implosion.

She has a 1980's Sony turntable, though. Direct drive, etc. It doesn't look substantial, or anything - but it is in working order.

I was thinking - how about swapping my cart on her TT (a basically new Audio Technica), and substitute it? I already talked to her, and she told me I could have both her speakers and her turntable if I want to. I'm thinking about giving her a Kenwood minicomponent in return (it still sounds great, but I definitely outgrew it a long time ago).

There is no question on my mind I *have* to replace the Technics TT; sometimes, the whole arm falls on top of the LP's I play. But, can I mod or fix the Sony TT so that it sounds halfway decent?

Thanks!

Uh, the ARM ff-f-f-f-falls off on top of the LP's while you're playing them??!

Ouch, doode. Time to get something really nice. Throw that thing in the trash!

Or keep it around for spinning LPs when cleaning them.
