I'm assuming you mean living-- you'll get different answers from people if you include "Rock And Roll Heaven" who are up with the "Spirit In The Sky"

Living:

Eric Clapton - Guitar/Voice
Clint Black- Guitar (acoustic)
James Taylor - Guitar/Voice (acoustic)
Brad Delp - Voice
Neil Peart - Drums
Nathan East - Drums
Greg Phillinganes - Keyboards
Leland Sklar - Bass
Ray Cooper - Percussion

Ok, there's the obligatory RUSH answer:
Bass - Lee
Drums - Peart
Guitar - Lifeson

(I learned to play guitar by figuring out nearly all Rush songs, so I'm extra-partial to Lifeson's technique :))

Ok... with that out of the way, here are some other fav's:

Vocals:
Neil Finn (Split Enz, Crowded House)
Ann Wilson (Heart)
Robert Plant
John & Paul
Glen Tilbrook

Bass:
Graham Maby (Joe Jackson)
Tony Leven

Guitar:
Jamie West-Oram (The Fixx)
Robbie Blunt (Robert Plant)
Steev Dinkins (Holy Zoo) (hey, honest! my brother's amazing)
Adrian Belew

Drums:
Stewart Copeland
Ringo
Bonzo
Moon

... limiting the topic strictly to living musicians, I'll divide my favorites among both the active and posthumous.

The best of the posthumous great rock musicians:

Geeetarist - Jimi Hendrix
Tonsals - Bon Scott
sub-woof - Gary Thain
rhythm sticks - Keith Moon
missle any - Brian Jones (g, k), Steve Mariott (g, v), Freddie Mercury (v, k), Felix Pappilardi (v, b), Chris Wood (f, s, var. wind instruments), Phil Lynott (b, v)

The best of those still alive & kickin' (i.e., who've maintained their virtuoso chops/voices & are still active)

Guitar - Steve Morse, (close 2nd) Michael Schenker (close 3rd) - Buck Dharma
Vocals - Paul Rodgers, (close 2nd) - Jon Anderson, (3rd) - John Kay
bass - Chris Squire (2nd) John Wetton
drums/perc. - Carl Palmer, (2nd) Bill Bruford, (3rd) Neil Peart

This was a very difficult list to compose becuase there are a number of very active first order musicians I haven't heard live in awhile or from whom I haven't heard any new music who may still have their old form or may even have technically improved their musicianship over the years. So, this is a very qualified list of preferences and is subject to change and/or additions where warranted.

Cheers,

I hate to sound predictable but my dream band was, is and always will be Stevie Ray Vaughan & Double Trouble.

Stevie - Tommy - Chris - Reese

I love many others but these 4 are all I really NEED.

Best - ED

My vote goes for "THE TOTAL PACKAGE".......The Beatles

Matt

I second the "total package" vote for the Beatles...arguably the best damn bassist (Paul) who's also a very good piano player, a great rhythm guitarist in John, an underrated drummer in Ringo, and a great guitarist in George.

The Band is also phenomenal, though I feel let down by their post-"Stage Fright" studio material (a better live band, though).

Otherwise, Jerry Lee Lewis gets my vote for best pianist, Paul on bass, Keith Moon on drums, and either Jimi Hendrix, Chuck Berry, or Pete Townshend, my three personal guitar gods, on lead. Van Morrison or Aretha Franklin would sing.

Stevie Ray Vaughan

Keyboard/Piano:

I don't think people appreciate the drive and talent of Stewart Copeland of The Police. When I was in High School, it was Tommy Lee and Neil Pert on everyone's minds. I really looked up to how this guy, Stewart, could do amazing stuff. He had a broad mind for precussion intrumentation, he was faster than hell, and also played incredibly loud. He had his own sound. "Next To You", "It's Alright For You", "Regatta De Blanc", "Spirits In The Material World".

Sting was really energetic beyond comprehension in the Police, but f**cking Stewart could keep up with him and then some. I miss the Police. Snif, Sniff. Stewart's still very talented even as a composer, and a great all-around guy too. I was glad he slapped Sting around occasionally. Weather the group knew of it or not, they were all good for each other, no matter how bitchy they were.

I won’t categorize between living and gone. But I will separate Songwriters from Musicians because IMO they are not necessary synonymous.

Lennon and McCartney
Bob Dylan
Jagger / Richards
Robbie Robertson

Musicians
Jimi Hendrix
Eric Clapton
Ry Cooder
Keith Moon
Miles Davis

The Greatest Musicians Ever (the Funk Brothers, of course):

James Jamerson (bass)
Benny Benjamin and Richard Pistol Allen (drums)
Jack Ashford, Bongo Brown, or Norman Whitfield (percussion)
Earl Van Dyke and Johnny Griffith (keyboards)
Robert White, Joe Messina, and Wah-Wah Ragin (guitars)

No other set of musicians defined a sound the way these guys did. There will never be another Motown...
