I have an opportunity to choose some "complementary" titles (my dad knows the owner and he asked me for a small list if I'm interested) from Collectables Records and I was wondering if there are some good suggestions (obscure good music/essential stuff/decent mastering/etc.).

Thanks,
Todd

Lately Collectables records have been good little doobies. Generally the Atlantic Jazz reissues like Mose Alison sounds nice. Others too. I think they did some Modern Jazz Quartet reissues that Atlantic was too busy to release. :(

Freddie King and Herbie Mann, thier box is actually quite a nice little package. If you were going for enjoyment/per/pound (and you're oink-oink pigging out on promos) Go for any of what they've done on their obscure titles for Atlantic Jazz titles. A lot of them are fabulous. Most of them are 2-Fers!

Mastering CAN BE hit or miss, but normally their worst is behind em. And boy, they were POOP!

They've scoffed up a nice useful domain name at http://www.oldies.com/

Thanks, Sckott. there's just so much to choose. I was thinking of getting 10 titles or so, maybe also a box set.

They're starting to command respect the way Rhino fought hard to get. They do use a "cheepness" approach to reissues, but the sound is quite good, and the classic Carmen McRay Atlantic stuff is obscure, but people look for that stuff in the bargain bins. It's absolutely astounding how the Nesuhi Etergun crew sliced through so many Jazz albums in the 70's.

Collectables will never be Rhino, but they're still surviving and doing some interesting titles. They're underdogs, and seem to be proud of it, like Sundazed.

Nesuhi Etergun @ R&R HOF. One important doode!

Stay away from Corea, Chick / Miroslav Vitous: Tones For Joan's Bones / Mountain In The Clouds.

Awful! Mastered from vinyl, lots of noise reduction, and a slight flanging effect to boot.

Anyone heard their version of Sonny Sharrock's "Black Woman"???

Thanks for the heads-up on the Mose twofer Sckott. I always look at it in the bins and wonder about the quality. I will pick it up now.
Can anybody comment on the quality of the Jimmy Giuffre 3/Music Man twofer? (I really should breakdown and buy the Guiffre Mosaic box and take advantage of the March sale)
