View Full Version : Album Cover Art

What are some of your favorite album covers?
I imagine a few of us around here have had to suffer the usual indignities of explaining to visitors to our homes of why we choose LPs over CDs. One reason I prefer LPs is the cover art is so much better on the larger area LP sleeves.
Memorable covers from my youth include any Ohio Players LP. Victoria's Secret catalogs couldn't hold a candle to a number of jazz releases in the 1960's. There is a record store where I live that has a restricted room, i.e., no kids, because of the "stimulating" covers. I may go there and write some titles to see if anyone recognizes them. Audiophileusa.com used to have a link from its site for discretionary LP covers.
On a more sober view, I do like the Roger Dean artwork on the Yes albums of the 70's. I'll add more as I think of them.

I have framed poster versions of "With The Beatles" and "Rubber Soul" hanging at home. Always liked those Robert Freeman covers the best.:D

Well, besides the ones Ronald mentioned. The Moody Blues covers are usually ones I think of when I think of cover art. Maybe Juicy Lucy - Get A Whiff Of This, and a Johnny Guitar Watson that I can't think of the title of at the moment.

I don't mean to spoil the party but we had a thread "Best album covers of all time" (
http://www.stevehoffman.tv/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=405) about a month ago. I love great album covers, LP size. :)

I figured as much. Sorry I missed it. A day late, a dollar short and arriving at closing time seems to describe my luck.
My introduction with regard to the Ohio Players was meant to be humorous. I guess I failed. I should work on my delivery.
I like the Zippo Lighter cover of Marley "Catch a Fire". I was hoping when MoFi re-issued it, they would use the Zippo, but instead they chose the cover with Marley drawing on a blunt. Universal Germany was supposed to re-issue the LP with the Zippo. I have yet to see it.
Does anyone have a copy of Small Faces "Ogden's Nut Gone Flake" in the round tin?

Well, the photo won't do you any good anyway. :D

Rasberries - Side 3 has a pretty cool cover. Come to think of it their first (self titled) LP was great too. It had a "scratch 'n' sniff" sticker that smelt of - you guessed it - raspberries!

I went out and bought a scanner just for you. ;) NOT! Actually I dug this out from an old email, courtesy of audiophile international (www.audiophileusa.com).

But that doesn't mean I don't play with fire. Just be careful not to catch one. :D

This cover was not a regular release but is rather interesting. It's a 3 record set from Status Quo titled From The Makers Of.... and 50,000 were produced in numbered sets. It is also a tin cover like the above mentioned Small Faces tin. This may have been a 20th anniversary set since it came out in the late 80's.
I'm one of about 3 or 4 Quo fans in the US! (This is a vinyl set)

I dont' smoke either. That habit has shortened the lives of too many relatives on my father's side, including my father.
The cover looks fantastic. I sure hope it is still in print.
Ding my dangies, I think the Small Faces "Ogden's Nut Gone Flake" tin is out of print. redtrumpet.com no longer has it.
Day late, dollar short.... closing time...

Ronald, here's what the Ogdens CD set includes. I bought this one not long after it was released. Those 6 cardboard thingies are supposed to be coasters! If I come across another one for sale I'll let you know. I had the original LP but it's now long gone. Have it on 8 track too. (ha!)

Catch A Fire may still be in print.

BTW, I think this is a beauty, if in LP size.

telefunken,
You have some nice photos. I missed the Status Quo packaging altogether when it came out. When I was a "Goldmine" subscriber years ago, I should have read the issues more thoroughly to find out about these packages. Thanks for taking the time to post them here.
The Ogden package looks fabulous. I think Tower.com may special order it, but because it is not in stock, there is no guarantee they will ever find it. Their price is $41.99.
Eight track... I used to read that 'zine devoted to eight tracks. It was an independent publication, i.e., done on a word processor and photocopier. I think Russ Forster edited/published it. Does anyone know if it is still available? I really liked the content. To some it is an acquired taste.
It's biggest proclamation was "eight track was the only medium free of the digits."
Maybe Steve ought to consider the purity of essence of the 8-track. Maybe never.
