I own a Sony DVP-S7700 (from a fews years back) and it changes layers fairly quick. I was wondering, however, do new players (with memory buffers?) have the ability to perform a layer change seemlessly? If so, what players do this?

Most new ones snap into layer-action fairly quickly. The pause is on almost every player even now.

My player is supposedly one of the slowest on the market - DVP-NS999ES. It's also Sony's newest top of the line DVD Player. It drives me a little nuts, but that's about all I can complain about. So, to answer your question; no, it has nothing to do with memory buffers as far as I can tell. Maybe mine "locks" firmly into place for security, but takes the extra time to unlock itself before changing layers (trying to convince myself that there's a good reason it's sooo slow :) )??

Some discs are authored for a seamless layer change. I believe a lot (but not all) of the Sony "Superbits" titles have this feature. As far as I can tell, they use a version of the seamless branching DVD feature to handle the layer change.

Most PC-based DVD players will layer change seamlessly as well. I have heard that one of the cheaper off-brand players (Apex, maybe?) has seamless layer changes, but I don't have any first-hand experience with these.
