Can anybody rate the Sony Mastersound Gold cds. I just picked up Supersessions from Music For A Song and I think it sound terrific. Does anybody know why Sony stopped producing them.Is it in anticipation of SACD?

It stinks all right.
In case anyone thinks I just like to bash MOFI all the time, they did a great job on the LP. Best version ever.
Al Kooper rules!

I agree with TP: Al Kooper rules !
The man has had a rough go of it lately. Had surgery to remove a benign tumor from his brain. I hear he's recovering well, and has some good things in the works including some unreleased live recordings from The Fillmore East with Mike Bloomfield as well as a remastered and expanded version of Super Session. I'll be all over these when they come out !
They don't make 'em like this fella anymore. God Bless Al Kooper !

Martinimaster,
Thought you might want to have a look at this posting from a little while ago. Just a side note. Humorem these are just the cd versions only.

Dave, Sorry for the delay, thanks for the thread. The Supersession cd is my first version in any form. I guess I have nothing to compare it to except my other audiophile cds. In a recent Stereophile issue, MF interviewed Bob Irwin, during which Irwin trashed the Mastersound project. Is that because of financial or quality issues? Martin

Get his two CD live set, now out of print. About half of it is amazing.

Mix of good and bad. There are somethings that were just initially available as gold until Sony used the SBM on aluminum re-issues. Robert Johnson "King of the Delta Blues Singers" for example. Couldn't find it anywhere except of cassette. Sony wrung through SBM and eventually released it on aluminum.
Child is Father to the Man has a lot of extra takes.
Loggins and Messina "Sittin' In" MF aluminum issue to me sounded better than the Sony gold.
Sly and Family Stone "Stand" is worth the ticket of admission. The LP versions and earlier Alum CDs are lifeless.
Chicago Transit Authority I thought was worth buying. Lots of tape hiss. All the vinyl copies I had were scratched.
My feeling is that Sony played with the upper bass and upper midrange/lower treble end eq on some issues to get a different sound. It might be a marketing ploy to get people who forked over the 25 bones to buy the disk to get them to think they were getting something special.

The one on Music Masters ? Got it ! Some real great moments on there. Now lets hope Sony gets off their collectives asses and releases the Al Kooper-Mike Bloomfield at The Fillmore East this year. From what Al's been saying this contains some of Bloomer's best playing. Keeping my fingers crossed.

L&M: you are right on.
Lack of lower midrange is another big problem. SH taught me everything I know about it. Kills the breath of life everytime.

Wise words. It happened in the early days of CD's too. Hey wait a minute, it's STILL happening! :(
