Since there are so many varying opinions on this issue, I thought i'd get an idea of who makes their own CD-Rs from LPs ande what is used used to do it.

I use a Sony CDR-W 33, with 24bit Super Bit Mapping. It's really a bargain, at just over $500 for a "pro" burner (meaning you don't have to use the more expensive consumer discs).

It also has a compressor/limitor built in, as well as a simple parametric eq - neither of which I've tried yet. Both work in the 24 domain before the SMB dither occurs.

I use cool edit pro and take the clicks out by hand. A note to the person who sent me a cdr of mono Surrealistic Pillow LP. First off I'm sorry I didn't contact you earlier but I had a computer crash and lost your e-mail address. To make a long story short I gave up on your copy as it was too noisy. Great sound but too many clicks and pops. :(

DENON CDR 1000, still learning to get the levels right for vinyl. Just changed to a higher output cart.(Clearaudio).

Jeff,

Put a piece of masking tape over that compressor/limiter button, 'kay?

Yeah, I would never trust automatic compression/limiting.

Wow - so far there are more standalone's than computer based cd burners. I'm actually surprised, I would have thought it'd be the other way around.

TDK - 3826 CD Recorder.

Consumer deck..great sound thanks to some very fine D/A converters....

Vinyl rips are a trip!

Hey Ben!

What does the TDK tend to run? Any good places on the net that sell them?

I use both. My standalone unit is a Pioneer Elite PRW-19. I use it mainly for vinyl transfers. My computer unit is some Sony model. Both work great.

I use my iMac and a computer-based external SCSI recorder: the Yamaha CRW6416SX. It's hooked up to the iMac's FireWire port via an Orange Converter (SCSI-to-FireWire) that performs flawlessly.

When I put LPs on CD, I go from the "tape out" of my Marantz 2230 receiver straight to the audio input of my iMac, and make AIFF files (1 LP side at a time) using SoundHack freeware. I then split the LP side into individual tracks within Adaptec (now Roxio) Jam 2.6. Any necessary digital editing is done with Peak LE.

As for discs ... I use whatever (name-brand) ones I can get cheaply.

My 2 cents, the poll needs to include a choice that says, "I use both!"

Plextor 16/10/40 for CD to CDR, Yamaha CDR-D651 for vinyl to CDR. I'm a newbie, I've only ripped three CDR's on the Plextor, nothing on the Yamaha yet!

I agree with Dan. I use both too. I use my standalone burner (Harman Kardon CDR30) for CD-CD copies and for direct copy of LPs that are in good shape. If they need some cleaning up I use the Sony drive on my computer and EAC to clean them up before I make a final copy.

I'm a newbie at this, but have had great success to date (no vinyl left, just CD to CD-R transfers). Equipment: a Lite-On USB 4x external burner for recording, my IBM laptop for playback, Easy Creator 4 software (bundled with the burner), Neato labels and Imation brand media.

Hi,

Thou I lack the killer pic, I also have/use the Sony CDR-W33. I second Jeff's emotion, it's alot of machine for the $.

Hey Steve, should we getta second piece of masking tape for the eq switch?

A Plextor 12/10/32 external SCSI, 10K RPM Seagate Cheetah hard drive, Cool Edit basic. I don't even have a good sound card, yet frequently seem to make CDs with more of the "breath of life" than retail (probably because I don't process all the life out of the signal when cleaning it up.) Rega P3 turntable. No tubes anywhere... I need to get more analog gear into my setup...

When ripping from another CD for comps, Exact Audio Copy fills the bill nicely.

I use a PC running Cool Edit Pro, Cool Edit 2000, Sound Forge 5.0, Vegas LE, DC Art32, Adaptec CD Creator deluxe 4.x, various lugins from Steinburg, Sound Forge, Syntrillium, and isotope.

Hey, Zoo!

This deck is unbelievable... the sound is awesome.

How about $280 bucks (plus s/h) at www.jandr.com?

Ask Tom Port about this deck....I'm sure you'll get an earful!

Best Wishes (and thanks for my avatar!),

Ben

I use a PC with CardDeluxe for input @ 96 Khz/24 bit.

Then I use Cool Edit to clean by hand, then downsample to 44.1 for CDs.

I have used various burners in the past.

I have another PC with another CardDeluxe for listening to the cleaned masters at 96 Khz in my listening room. CDs are for the SUV and friends. :D

I've been using a Plextor 8/20 SCSI burner for the last 2 years. Files are imported through a DAL CardDeluxe 24-bit card. I'm waiting for a Metric Halo MIO 2448 (http://www.mhlabs.com/mobileio/mio.html) 24bit/96k A/D/A convertor for location recording and A/V projects....and then, when I have money, I buy food ;)

I use both also. A Denon CDR-W1500 to transfer vinyl/tapes to CDR. Then I do cleanup and editing on the PC, mostly with Cool Edit 2000. I also use a program called WaveRepair to manually remove pops and clicks.
