I still have my original DVD and didn't feel like upgrading right away.

The film looks that much better?

John,
Keep in mind that my display is large FP at 48" high, but I thought the new transfer was clearly better while still looking film-like. I don't know how much a difference it would make on a 32" direct view or 50" RPTV.

This was the best looking version I have ever seen of Casablanca. I was totally wowed by the depth in the picture. At times it seemd like it was three dimensional, but that might be because I was stoned out of my mind.

The documentary with Lauren Bacall was great. I hadn't realized how many movies Bogie did for WB. I'd really like to see that Sci-Fi film he was in.

You must've really been stoned. That was Leonard Maltin, not Lauren Bacall!

T caption for the tight shot of Ingrid Bergman says "notice the grain removal in the SE", and sure enough there seems to be little or no grain left in the new version. Personally I'd hold on to the old DVD even if I bought the new SE.

Dan,
Sounds like you have not gotten the SE and feel that its too clean and doesn't look like flim. If true you should check the SE out, it still looks like film. Its a great restoration that doesn't look sanitized.

I wasn't that stoned! It was called Bahcall on Bogie and it's on disc two.

The shot of Bergman with the noticeable grain removal was likely from a dupe section where the original negative was damaged and not used to make the transfer element. They cleaned it up to sit better with the rest of the transfer, but not so much that it does not look like it was from a film source. This DVD is a much more film-like presentation than, say, Citizen Kane.

Thanks Ken and John, that's good news. It's on my "must buy" list now.

So how do I tell if the copy of Casablanca down at the local is the old one or the newer SE version?

The new Casablanca comes in a light-beige-colored cardboard container, the older version is the red-hued snapper case.

The new one is also housed on two discs, whereas the older transfer is a sigle disc.

Thanks. I'll look out for a 2-DVD Casablanca
