Since I haven't used this beautiful stereo amp in a while, it's time for it to go to a good home. Sniff sniff. Before I list it on Ebay, is there anyone here who wants a DEAD MINT McIntosh 240 stereo amp? It is from 1967 and probably has less than 50 hours on it. Owned by a dentist from Brentwood, it's filled with Telefunken input tubes and 4 matched "magic midrange" GE 6L6GC power tubes (my favorite). Has matching tube cage and comes with original Mac 240 owners manual, etc.

Please note that since it has a volume control, you can plug your CD player right in to it directly. Amazing tubey McIntosh sound, full of the "breath of life", and as you know, 45 tube watts a channel sound more like 100!

If anyone is interested, please e-mail my webmaster.

I really want this piece to go to a wonderful home. It is an amazing sounding unit.:)

Excuse my ignorance, but how do we email your webmaster? I can't figure it out!! I need to know how much you would like for it. I have always wanted to get into tube amplification, but, of course, money is always an issue. Please let me know. I can be reached by email at cdesjardins@attbi.com

Thank you.

It's a beauty all right. The lucky owner will be very happy with it, because Steve knows his tubes better than anyone, and this thing is full of the right stuff.

Steve and I went through a dozen iterations of tubes for our Macs. I had three different sets of outputs I liked to use to get the sound I wanted on certain recordings. It's amazing how changing one tube can change the sound so much.

That is a true beauty. Funny, the ones I have seen on Ebay that say "mint" look trashed compared to this one. The chrome is perfect.

Any mods inside?

I guess you are selling for around $2500.00. Am I in the ballpark? Don't even need a preamp, so whatever it costs, it's a great deal; bought from the man himself! What projects did you use this Mcintosh on?

Too many questions, sorry. :D

Hi Steve. Just a little reminder (in case you forgot) June 3rd is my birthday! Maybe Dick Clark and Ed McMahon will stop by too!

Sorry for the delay, I was actually upstairs working on something. :)

Uh, questions.

Well, I've had this McIntosh since 1992, right when DCC went Gold. I started with a Mac 275 (serves me right for listening to the "bigger is better" crowd). I just couldn't stand the sound of the Big Mac, so I dumped it and settled on this minty 240 instead.

I mastered Rod Stewart "Never A Dull Moment" (unissued CD version) with it and Bob Seger "Night Moves", among others. One other nailbiting biggie too.....Ah yes, "Fresh Cream", CD version.

READ MY LIPS: THIS AMP HAS NEVER BEEN MODDED. Angel, you have been either buying or selling to Japanese audiophiles, because they ALWAYS ask that (as well they should).

I was thinking $2,500.00, yes. The McIntosh paperwork still has the template cutout diagram for gosh sakes.

Oh, in 1992 I paid 1800 smackers for it minus any tubes, and glad to get it. This thing is truly New Old Stock. I don't even think it has been properly broken in yet!

So, $2,500.00

Belongs in a McIntosh Moo-seam!

Steve, I'll trade you my 1973 Super Beetle for it.
I bought the Beetle in '99 for $2400 and I've tweaked
the engine for another $300 (laughing).

BUT seriously, I have to talk to my credit union and see if they will do me
a loan before you sell it to someone else.

I used to have the C-32 (may have the number wrong, but it's the one
they reissued a few years back) tube preamp and a 2205 solid state
amplifier; and my then-girlfriend (1988) smashed the two with a
pipe wrench one night when she was angry with me (this girl had problems needless to say).

I've been saddled with crap-for-stereo (comparatively) for the last
13 years and every time I see one of these things my eyes just glaze over.

Did you give her a proper burial?

I was thinking $2,500.00

How 'bout $50.00 down and $50.00 a month for 50 years?

I'll pay $10 just to smell it while it's warm.

Thomoz,

Yeah you had a McIntosh C-22 tube preamp. A nice unit. Too bad it got destroyed. At least it wasn't your head.

If I didn't already have two Marantz Model 9s.... :(
Oh well. You can't have everything. Where would you put it  :D
Nice amp though.

Since it doesn't need a preamp, I had it for a while in our bedroom, with a little Denon CD player and a pair of bitty speakers. It sounded great, because even on little speakers, the best thing about the McIntosh 240 is that the louder you play it, the better it sounds. The thing just does not distort at any level. It just sounds warmer, more like a Fairchild (Beatles) tube compressor. I love that sound!

Steve,

Aside from the McIntosh C-22 (an undestroyed one), any other preamp you care to recommend to pair with this beauty, with LP play back in mind?

Steve Hoffman

LP playback? Ah, just about any old thing with a neutral RIAA playback curve. See, the Mac 240 has more than enough tubey magic to go around, so we don't want to feed too much more via a C-22 or Marantz 7C. Not for those prices at any rate.

Sckott and folks like him know of all the neat phono stuff out there for not much money. Maybe they can chime in here.

Bottom line, I don't like to "match" or double old amps/preamps up. It's like putting on two pair of rose colored glasses at the same time, instead of one. At least that's how I look at at.

:)

The unit is SOLD.

Thank you one and all!

I know this will start a lot of rumours but...

Congratulations! $2,500 will buy a lot of diapers. :)
