View Full Version : Neil Young Harvest Nautilus LP
Hey, doods.....(and doodette)......
(I'm just overloaded from the television interviews with the Olympic skiing freestyle guys - need to work on my Encino-speak)
Does anyone have an opinion on the sound quality of this very rare LP? Does anybody out there own it and want to praise it, lambaste it, or -gasp- maybe part with it?
Goldmine rates it rare and semi-valuable at around $150-160. Is it worth it if I come across this baby - either on the 'bay or out in the "real world?"
Thanks in advance and.......best to the board!

It is very good. Transparent midrange.
I prefer the right original domestic. Look for LH in the dead wax. Better bass, more solid sound overall.
Is it worth it? That's the market price, if that's what you mean. Anything else you have to answer for yourself, man.

Thanks, Tom...I appreciate your input.
Could you comment, please, on the Nautilus audiophile LP series in general?
We've had many discussions here on DCC and MOFI - but very little light has been shed on Nautilus....I don't know much about them, when they were in business, how good were their methods... etc etc
And, as always - thanks!

I'll tell you this. You don't buy records in general, you buy them in particular, so what difference does it make how they did overall? Buy the good ones!
Most of their stuff sucks, like all the other labels from that day.
Some are the greatest disasters on the planet.
CSN's first album--THE WORST!
The Cars? THE WORST!
Time Loves a Hero? THE BEST!
See the pattern? Me neither.:)

While I don't own the Nautilus Harvest LP I do own two others Linda Ronstadt - Simple Dreams and The Outlaws - Green Grass And High Tides. Both are much better than the domestic versions on either LP or CD. I would rate the Ronstadt LP as excellent but the Outlaws LP is a little bright. It could be the way the master sounds for all I know.

The domestic versions? All 50 of them?
When you get the right Simple Dreams the domestic is better, much punchier.
The average one may suck. Don't buy an average one!:)

Tom - I need to learn to be more specific in my replies now that you are out there. I meant to say , "...then the domestic versions I have heard". Unfortunetly, since I don't own a store I don't get any comp copies and I can't afford to buy 12 different versions of every record or CD I like to find the best so I have to go with what I know. I do appreciate your giving your opinion on these things as you probably have spent as much or more time than anyone else here evaluating different versions of various recordings. I suspect you'll save me from buying more trash in the future. At least I know if I call you I'll get what you consider the best version or a hard time trying to do otherwise.

Yes, I can try to help you and everybody else get better records, if that's what people want.

Hi Tom...
I've been seeing your posts over the last few days. You've made quite a little home for yourself here. :D I've had such a busy week that I just haven't had time to post much at all. In spite of my current workload, I'm trying to poke my head in a few times a day to keep up on what's happening.
I've posted plenty of times on this board how helpful you've been to me in making vinyl purchases and recommended you wholeheartedly to others. I value your frank opinions and am glad to see that others on this board will benefit from your vast knowledge.
P.S. I can see (on some other threads) that you are causing quite a stir already. Eventually, people will realize that you love to push people's buttons and then sit back and watch the fun...:p

Tom is correct about the sound quality of Nautilus half-speeds (and half-speeds in general, for that matter). Thanks to ebay, I dumped my copy of Harvest 4 years ago for the then very appreciated going rate of $90; got that much for my MoFi King Crimson too; neither of these sounded as good (to me) as my first pressings (that I bought new during their intial releases).
One of favorite records to find is Steve Miller's much maligned and misunderstood Recall the Beginning... A Journey From Eden, Capitol SMAS 11022. The matrix numbers on the 6 copies I own range from F1 through F7, with the F2 and F7 copies sounding the best by far. Steer clear of the ones with the lime green label, as they don't come close to the sound on the red labeled pressings.

Thank you for the kind words. Much appreciated.
As for pushing people's buttons, I really honestly bend over backwards not to do that on this forum.
As anyone who knows me will tell you, I am much more "frank" than what you are reading here.
Steve asked me to be polite when I post and this is as nice as I can be and still say what I believe to be true.
This hobby has more naked emperors than any other on the planet, of that I have no doubt. They are legion but they shall remain nameless. (One of the few who is fully clothed is our fearless leader of course.)
But, like Steve, I mostly lead by example. The records I recommend speak for themselves, and me.
But that doesn't stop me from shooting my mouth off all day long, which this forum has allowed me to do to more than one person at a time.
If person X, let's say he has the initial MF and writes for a big magazine, says some record is good and you buy it and it stinks, can you send it back to him and cause him a lot of grief?
Of course not. He can afford to be wrong. I can't, because once you get the record home you are probably not going to be fooled into thinking it's good when it's not (although as I have said this must happen pretty often too.)
So my standards are as high as I can afford them to be.
Not out of the goodness of my heart. (It's not that good.) It's good business to do it that way.
I'm on your side because that's the best place to be for everybody in this game. You get good records, I get money, we both win!
Yippee!
