I am looking for some MC30's or possibly a MC240.
Please let me know if you see a good set for sale.
These have new caps so I am not sure if that is good or bad.
What do you think?

Try and find a pair with the ORIGINAL power cords, caps, etc.

I did......

And I wasn't even looking!

If I can, you can; be patient.

Let's just say that no one from Japan would go near those MC-30's on eBay. Too mucked up for 'em.

Thank you for the good advice Steve.

My list of stuff to buy:
C30's
Grover Line Stage
LS3/5A new or possibly vintage 16 ohm (need to do more research)
Finish off the rest of my system with Grover cables
Then possibly down the line pick up a set of new McIntosh tube pre-amp and power amp to compare to the vintage - then keep the better sounding set up.

Don't buy vintage BBC's. Waste of dough. Just get a Stirling pair. The new ones sound more like the prototype than the older ones..

You're not going to power them with McIntosh MC-30's though, are you?

Thanks for the tip on the Sterlings Steve.

Are you using an affordable amp to power yours? What would you recommend as a good affordable amp for the Sterlings?

I was thinking the C30's would be good or even a Dynaco ST70.
I have not researched the 11ohm load capabilities of the various amps yet.
I still have a lot to learn...

Clay,

It's Stirling, as in "Stirling Broadcast". They make the BBC monitor and are nice British blokes.

The downside of having an inefficient mini-monitor like the BBC is that is doesn't have as much dynamics as a different kind of speaker. Therefore, more power = more dynamics.

HOWEVER, dynamics are not everything and small tube amps work great with them, but not at anything approaching a realistic music level. At moderate volume, anything would work.

I use these WAVAC SET monoblocks with them. The MD-805's About 50 watts a channel.

I think that Mac 30's (which have slightly less dynamics than (let's say) a Marantz 8B of the era MIGHT work with a pair of BBC's but I've never tried it.
