Hey Casablanca buyers - what cartoon(s) came with yer new super deee-luxe DVD that just came out? Carrotblanca is on there, but are there other toons, too? I found out from Jerry Beck that Robin Hood is coming with both Robin Hood Daffy and Rabbit Hood (neither will be in the 1st Looney Toons boxed set) - any info on Casablanca's bonus goodies would be appreciated!!! :)

The only cartoon packaged with it is the mid-90s film "Carrotblanca". It's not as good as the classic era, but it's better than most WB cartoon from the 60s, 70s, and 80s. It's also the first time Carrotblanca has been made available on video in stereo (in the US, at least). The previous VHS release was in mono even though there was a dolby stereo credit attached to it. The version on the DVD has a 5.1 soundtrack.

Here's the line-up for future cartoon pairings with classic WB films:

The Adventures of Robin Hood: "Katnip Kollege", "Rabbit Hood" & "Robin Hood Daffy"

Treasure of the Sierra Madre: "Hot Cross Bunny", "Eight Ball Bunny"

Yankee Doodle Dandy: "Bugs Bunny Gets the Boid", "Yankee Doodle Daffy", "Yankee Doodle Bugs"

The first short listed after each film above will be part of a new "night at the movies" concept from WB, where they will offer contemporaneous trailers, newsreel clips, shorts, and cartoons from the film's release.

Sorry, no other cartoons. :(

The rest of the DVD extras:

- Introduction by Lauren Bacall

- Two feature-length audio commentaries, one by Roger Ebert and the other by film historian Rudy Behlmer.

- Newly-unearthed outtakes and deleted scenes, presented with subtitles because the sound elements are lost.

- Two documentaries, "Bacall on Bogart" (produced in 1988 for PBS) and "You Must Remember This" (made in 1992 for Turner Classics).

- Reminisces from Stephen Bogart (Bogey's son) and Ingrid Bergman's daughters Pia Lindstrom and Isabella Rosselini.

- The pilot episode from the 1955 "Casablanca" TV series.

- A consensed "Screen Guild Players Radio" version of the movie, featuring Bogart, Bergman, and Paul Henried.

- Scoring session outtakes.

- The Marx Brothers' A Night In Casablanca, and a still of the famous letter from Groucho to Warner Brothers. (Okay, I made this one up, but wouldn't that have been great? ;) )

In addition, November will see DVD releases of Dark Passage, High Sierra, To Have And Have Not, and They Drive By Night. Each will include several bonus features, including a classic WB cartoon. Dark Passage will feature Freling's "Slick Hare" (Bugs, Elmer, Bogey, and Baby) and To Have will offer Clampett's "Bacall To Arms" (Bogey, Baby and one horny wolf); the other cartoons in the series have yet to be announced.

It looks gorgeous. I honestly did not think they could improve much on the previous DVD release without doing more harm than good, but they did. It is more than just improved compression, too. It has the striking clarity of the Citizen Kane DVD, but looks much more film-like.

It basically looks like I remember the 1992 50th anniversary theatrical presentation looking, but with fewer print blemishes (and lower resolution, natch ;)).

They just released "Objective Burma" and "Master of Ballantrae" over the last couple of months. "The Prince and the Pauper" and "Kim" are due on August 26th.

In a chat with the Home Theater Forum, WB promised a "large Flynn promotion" by the end of the year above and beyond what has been announced to date, which I hope will include "Captain Blood" and "The Sea Hawk". It will probably depend on the condition of the film elements.
