View Full Version : New universal SACD/DVD-Audio player out!

The Pioneer DV-563A SACD/DVD Audio universal player just came out in Montreal, at a measly $299 at Future Shop. Has anybody tried this player — a salesman at a higher-end store scoffed when asked about it, to the effect of: "How good could it be for $299?" Any thoughts?

Certainly can't be beat for new adoptees and those with low to mid-fi systems.

Sounds like its the Sony 775 for Universal Player newbies. The 775 was a good cheap SACD player that was the audio bargain of 2002.

This one could be the audio bargain of 2003!

Some of the Universal players downsample the DSD to PCM so be aware of that possibility.

that may be true with this player. if you really want full DSD and have the system to show it off...then a better quality player would be needed (like the Denon or Marantz).

This player will be great for the masses though.

The 563 down samples the 565/45a does not, still a great deck for the$:thumbsup:

I just may pick one up for the house system and take the Panasonic RP82 to the listening room....

A cheaper solution than the Pioneer 45A!

I'll think about that one for a while....

Sorry folks for the interruption but this is driving me nuts.

When DSD is "downsampled" to PCM, very little downsampling (if any?) is occurring.

Remember:

DSD uses a sampling rate of 2.8 million samples per second, BUT each sample consists of only a one bit word.

Dvd-audio's highest resolution PCM format samples at "only" 192,000 samples per second but each sample uses 24 bits to form a piece of sound data. The smallest data word dvd-audio uses is 16 bits.

In other words, you cannot directly compare these two formats.

That is true. One looks at the height of the amplitude of the wave (PCM), the other the change in height (DSD).

Many audio engineers (both R&D and pure recording) do feel that DSD has an advantage in that it samples more frequently which can capture note transients better. The word length is not as relevent to understanding DSD since you are looking at change in height.
