I finally made my decision. I have blown my discretionary money for the rest of the year!!!!!!But this one was in such good condition, how could I resist!!!!!!!!!!!:)
BTW, what is the best rectifier tube for C-20. Already have some 12AU7's to replace the teles.
CONGRATULATIONS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
:D
You will be very happy with such a great pre-amp to go with the MC240 YEA!!
I seem to remember another thread that mentioned Steve's favorite rectifier tube. I have a Mullard currently.
I just bought some Amperex 12AU7 for my C20

Clay, i have a pair of Mullards 12AU7's, but I'll probably get another set of Bugle boys, as they work real well in the 240. Hopefully, this preamp won't need much work done to It. I've already got some extra Tele 12AX7's.:)
My good friend an expert said the only thing about the C20 is that the volume control can go out and it is not available as a replacement part.
So check that the volume in both channels is the same as you move the volume control - if it is you should be fine. I have mine plugged into a dedicated power strip so I never actually use the volume control to turn off the pre-amp.
Now I just need a MC 240 or 2x MC30's;)
I just bought a vintage ESS electronic crossover - they are so rare and it is the brand I had in my 70s system. Except for the Dual top of the line direct drive(901?) turntable, I have successfully recreated my exact system from 1972 including the now unavailable Micro Acoustics 2002e cartridge. It really sounds fantastic. We should visit each other some time for a listen:)
I am really happy for you. You will love it and it will sound fantastic.

volume control???? I never heard that. I'd better be looking for a DOA type C-20, with a good volume control.;) And maybe soon, we can check out each other's systems!I just got central air installed this week, now I'll be able to hear my system in more or less silence again, without burning up!!!!!!!!!

Do you mean that it won't turn off? Or it won't adjust the volume?
I think I *might* have an opportunity to trade in my MX110...!!! Not sure if I'll do that... just thinking about it.

Gary, the failure mode I am aware of is uneven loudness between the channels and the volume is adjusted. ie: left channel louder at 10:00, right channel louder at 12:00 etc
Ron - Post when you get it hooked up and let us know what you think...Congratulations again.

Yeah, I'm gonna have to order some Grover, but its gonna have to wait a bit.............Do you know the demensions of a C-20 Clay?
$60 for a 1/2 meter - what a deal. It does sound better than my $220 silver cable (that one sounded better than my $100 copper)
C20
face plate
15 3/4" w
5/1/4" t
behind the face plate
14 1/2"w
5" t Including the feet
11" d
Sounds incredible

So you don't think i'll miss the Parasound?
It will be good for the garage.
After you hear the C20 I actually don't think you will think the Parasound sounds good anymore.
I have a Mac C26 that sounded great until I got used to hearing the C20, now it is just a good back up for testing amps and stuff like that.
It may be a bit slow (according to Steve) - {I don't exactly know what slow vs. fast sounds like}, yet it provides a sound that is pleasing.
I am saving for a Grover line stage or a the new Mac tube amp and pre-amp so I can hear fast and compare it to slow to see what I like to listen to.
The C20 is also about the best looking pre-amp ever built.
Ron,
Congrats on your purchase! That Mac looks like a beauty. No, I don't think you'll miss the Parasound :)
You're gonna be in McIntosh heaven with this baby and the MC240. Many good times ahead!!
Hey Ron,
One of the guys here has 3 C20's and said they all sound a bit different.
We should probably each get a couple more and compare the best with the best:)
I would like to get a Mac amp to upgrade from the Dynaco ST70 with Mullards. I may even be able to bring myself to sell 2 of the 3 after a Mac arrives.

Hey Ron,
I think you'll love the pairing of the C-20 w/ your 240. You'll probably also like the look. :)
I have two C-20's and one C-22 and they all have a different sound. Just like w/ the 240, it may take some work to get the baby in primo condition BUT it's the price of admission! :) I've found my better sounding C-20 to have amazing mid's but slow/flabby bass. IMO, it's well worth the tradeoff to have a life-like mid-band. On the right recordings (female vocals, acoustic instruments, etc.) this is an AMAZING combo. The "Pizza Tapes" will actually come to life in your house!
Rectifier tube.... RCA or GE. The key..... made in the USA.

Have you compared the C20 with the MX110?
Anyone?
Just wondering if it's worth it to trade up to a C20.

Hi Gary,
SH addressed this comparison on Ron's previous McIntosh thread. The short answer........ it's worth it. :)

Congrats Ron, the Teles that came with it are worth about $700 alone, great deal, IMO. :)

That's actually below market value for 12AX7's. Upscale Audio charges $150 for 1 12AX7 tele and $100 for 1 12AU7, you do the math, that's, well, $950.:)

They do? You mean a new Tele sealed in the box, correct?

That's correct. Try any online tube source and be amazed at the price. I picked up a couple of Dynaco 12AX7's last year for $40 a piece, basically a tele smoothplate, has the diamond bottom. It is crazy that Tele's are so pricey but it's all about supply and demand. :)

Well, the ones in the preamp are used so it's not the same thing.
Heck, I have 50 or more sealed Telefunken 12AX7's from 10 years ago and the company paid almost $100.00 each for them then!
