I'm trying to track down "Walk Away, Renee", on CD, in stereo. I know all Left Banke comps are out of print, but if anybody can comment "Renee" on the following comps (mono/stereo, sound quality)... that'd be excellent:

45's on CD, Vol. 3 (Rebound)
Classic Rock: 1966 - The Beat Goes On (Time Life)
Jukebox Hits of 1966, Vol. 1 (Jukebox)
Hard To Find 45s on CD, Vol. 6 (Eric)
Highs of the Sixties (Warner Bros.)

Thanks!

Original stereo mix is on Highs in the 60s. Sounds great too. Like it better than the remix.

+1

I do like the remix, but like Mark I prefer the original. I think there are some other threads about this that also recommend this CD. It's pretty easy to find.

All the CDs listed above have "Walk Away Renee" in stereo. I don't know of any CD sources for the mono version (and none are listed at the top40musiconcd.com site).

That's unfortunate, because I think the mono version is a better mix than either the original stereo or remixed versions. However, even though the mono mix is more cohesive, it's still less-then-stellar sounding...something about the recording or mixing of the vocals always sounded odd and distant.

I've not found one. "Pretty Ballerina" in mono is on a CD or two but not RAW.

Thanks for all the feedback! So the only one with the original stereo mix is on "Highs of the Sixties" and the remix is on all others?

Check out "Chartbusters USA" Vol.1 on the ACE import label.

The problem with the original mono mixes was that the vocal track was quite dry, and lacking the reverb that appeared on the single.

The song must have gone through a bunch of bounce downs, since the flute overdub is quite obviously punched-in on the string track. Even the modern remix which emulates the sound of the 45 still cuts rather aburptly when the flute comes in.

Great tune, though.

Just picked this up this week: Hard To Find 45s on CD, Vol. 6 (Eric)
sounded just fine. I like that series pretty well.

It is a stereo mix, but not theirs.

Doesn't the Dennis Drake comp also contain the original stereo mix?

I've uploaded samples for comparison:

Walk Away Renee (original stereo) (http://www.4shared.com/file/108616964/60c53755/Walk_Away_Renee_-_Left_Banke__original_stereo_.html)

Walk Away Renee (There's Gonna Be a Storm stereo remix) (http://www.4shared.com/file/108616503/a1e1fc14/Walk_Away_Renee__Theres_Gonna_Be_a_Storm _stereo_remix_.html)

The original smokes the remix! I guess I never realized the version on There's Gonna Be a Storm is a remix. Is the original from Highs of the Sixties? I know I have that here too.

I obtained the original stereo from my mp3 collection. I'm sorry to say I don't know where it was taken from, but I know it's the original stereo mix.

This is definitely the version I played on the radio back in the day...

The remix seems to have a stray, slightly out of tune backing vocal mixed higher than the original mix.

It is the same. It's the original mix. See post #2.

There is a HUGE difference in the two mixes. The remix completely destroys the rhythm track and its so unexciting - everything is bland blended together. I'm really shocked that Bill Inglot thought it was a good idea to remix it that drastically. "Pretty Ballerina" is even worse.

For what its worth the original mixes of all of the first album are contained on the Bam Caruso CD "And Finally." In the case of the non hits the remixes are a lot better IMO.

When I hear them back-to-back like that, I like the original mix better...even though it's a little bright. But I still have to say that I like the mono mixes the best. (MarK: where can one get "Pretty Ballerina" in mono?)

"Pretty Ballerina" in mono is on Sunshine Days 5 (http://www.amazon.com/Sunshine-Days-Vol-60s-Classics/dp/B000009NSM/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=music&qid=1243644660&sr=8-3). Sounds fantastic but its not a cheap CD. :shake:

Could be on other CDs but I don't know of which ones.

I was so pleased with ...And Finally when I first found it in 1988. I was glad to have a different master even when the Inglot anthology came out.

Then I stopped being so glad when it was pointed out here that Bam Caruso did a lot of needledropping in those days.

Still that disc holds good memories and the artwork is fun!

Tom, I don't believe that any of And Finally contains needledrops. Not sure what masters were given to Bam Caruso but it does seem to be tape.

I've found that I can be fooled, so I usually believe the worse case depicted.

However, you've restored value for me with your info. Thanks!
