View Full Version : Who's Next (oh no, not again!!!)

I know this one's been beaten to death, but here goes!
I own an '80s copy of Who's Next, pressed in Japan, which apparently was done after the US run that everyone wants. Is it known for sure that the Japanese press used a bad copy of Steve's transfer, or is there some other issue that makes this CD less desirable?
I guess I'm just confused what you all know about the Japanese pressed CD. All I have to compare it to is the original US Decca vinyl, and the CD kills it (no big surprise there, 'cause that vinyl always stunk!). But I think the CD actually sounds pretty good on its own. I can't imagine that it's worse than the current remaster. Can anyone tell me if they did an A/B with the original US press (or Canadian) CD and what is similar/different between them?
Thanks - just trying to save myself $12 bucks (futile!).

Mike, for gosh sakes, buy a Canadian CD and compare them for us. Then we will know. Mark it down as "research". :)
Do you have to go to Canada for that one? Eh

Oh well. So much for saving the $12 bucks! But I'm up to it :)

I have heard of many different issues of Who's Next, but have never actually heard any of them. I only have listened to the one version I have owned since probably 1986 or 1987.
My version is a Polydor from West Germany- Polydor #813651-2. The only dates on the cover artwork or the disc are 1971 and 1983.
If anyone has heard this- how does it compare with the Canadian version?

Thanks Steve,
Banished to the archives should mean banished to the showers. Seems like Who's Next is pretty hot topic- just do a search
.
Guess I should just try it myself and buy the Canadian version- cheap enough.

I'm content with my Canadian CD of "Who's Next."

While I have yet to see an original copy of Who's Next, it's my understanding that at least some of the Japanese pressings are the "good" ones. It's *known* that some of the later US pressings aren't as good.
The German Polydor CD kind of blows. A lot of hiss, plus crummy fade-ups at the start of some songs (Baba and Behind Blue Eyes, in particular).

Thanks Luke. I really do think my Japanese press sounds really nice, so maybe I'll just have to trust my ears this time. No need for more experiments (and no budget for them either!).
Mike V.,
The most prominent feature of Steves recording is that you can hear the cymbals ring out for a while as opposed to sounding tight and short. ;)

Hi,
I'm new to this forum.
There is a lot of talk about the Who's next cd MCABD37217, but when I saw it on HMV there is a vinyl version as an option.
Is this mastered by Steve?
Is it good?
I have the MCA "Heavy vinyl" version MCA 11164. How does this compare?

Welcome count.d!
I have no idea about the vinyl version. Didn't even know there was one!
Anyone have a clue as to what this is?
Nope, have never seen the vinyl version up here.
