View Full Version : Bummer: Repaired preamp not really fixed

I sent my preamp out for repairs after it started emitting a very loud hum on all sources. (Didn't want to dig into it myself.) It has been gone for a few weeks, and I was missing it. It's back. Unfortunately now there's a new buzz in the phono preamp that wasn't there before. (Yes, I am sure it's the preamp itself.) Fairly low level, but loud enough to annoy.
Bummer.
Thought I'd share the joy.
Thanks for listening. Which is what I'm going to try to do just now despite the buzz.

Steve,
Try playing around with cables and placement with respect to other components, cables and cords. It could (hopefully) be ground loop. Cheater plugs will also help with this. Good luck!

Steve, I would agree with Jay on this one if it is only happening in the phono stage. Give it a try and let us know the results. It is well isolated I gather?

Hi Steve,
Have ya checked the tubes? Maybe they got wacked around in transit. That sure would be an easy and inexpensive fix! :)
Good Luck,

Guys,
Thanks for the suggestions. But this is not a ground loop or grounding issue. (Or rather it's not a ground loop external to the preamp.) That was the first thing I thought of. The buzz is there even when NOTHING is plugged in except headphones. It also remains when the preamp is physically reoriented. This is a preamp problem. It was not there before the repairs.
It does not sound like a tube problem, but if it is they should be replaced under warranty, as part of the deal was retubing. Since it's only in the phono stage I seriously doubt it's the tubes.
