Pretty depressing. You might say their ridiculous guarantee to Mariah is costing them their studios and then some.

Mariah Carey the downfall of Abbey Road...

Another sign of the apocalypse?

What's next?

Britney Spears buys the entire Rolling Stones catalogue from Klein and begins to cover every single song - note by agonizing note - and nothing can stop her - nothing!

Shudder,

Ben

The EMI/Mariah buy out may have additional consequences. Maybe the days of long term artist/record company contracts is no longer a viable business model. When you think about it, these contracts mimic the old hollywood studio system, a concept that died out in the 50's.

I fear that if all the recording artists were made "free agents", we may initially loose some of the more experimental music (read: self indulgent) due to the artist having increased pressure to produce hits. Imagine Bruce Springsteen trying to sell "Nebraska" as a stand alone disc to a room full of suits.

However, as the fall of the Hollywood studio system didn't stop the flow of unique independant films, and maybe even INCREASED their visibility, I would imagine that the fall of the recording industry "studio system" may actually be a good thing for the "music industry".

>>>>>No, it would not. The masters are part of the EMI assets and have nothing to do with the studio.

The person who buys the studio is only buying the building and the equipment...no tapes!!

Well I heard that it is not allowed for certain tapes to leave Abbey Road.... ;)

Or in other words, buying the studio might be a reasonable thing if one would get the Beatles master tapes :D
