I am just getting started collecting the DCC LP's and CD's and I am looking for suggestions on which titles to look for first. I like all types of music.

I'd grab anything that says Paul McCartney or Creedence Clearwater Revival on it.

Hi Scott,

If you don't mind me asking, how old are you? What years do you consider to be your musical "home base", or a period that you particulary like. I think it's best to start there, as when you listen to a DCC release of music that you are familiar with - their value will be most evident.

Then you must decide how much you are willing to spend. Some of Steve's titles regulary command a hefty entry fee (> $100.00)

Thanks,
Kevin

I'm 53 yars old and my musical home base is from the mid 60's to the mid 80's. I have been collecting music since the Mid 60's and have most of the MFSL recordings I want and want to brach out. I realize that some of the LP's and CD's are pretty expensive so I want to get the best recordings for the money I am going to spend. Thanks for the help.

Hi,

Some of my favorites are:

All the CCR titles (you've never heard them like this before!)
If you want the LPs you might wait for the new CCR lps that Steve is working on

Elvis 24 Karat Hits (best sounding Elvis ever)

Roy Orbison All Time Gr Hits (You won't believe the sound here!)

All 3 Nat Cole titles are UNREAL!! If you like Nat at all, you must have these titles!!

Both Badfinger discs (awesome bonus tracks!)

Jethro Tull "Aqualung" (as good as it gets! first time from correct tapes)

Jethro Tull "Original Masters" (note that the CD has the entire first side of Thick as a Brick!)

I guess I should stop there, before I list everything that I have. I will say that I have never bought a DCC gold CD and been disappointed.

Hi Scott,

Welcome:D

The unmentioned artists (so far)

Deep Purple: Made In Japan Just blows away any other version

The Doors. All 4 albums I promise you've never heard Jim sound this good.

The Eagles. Five stars on both albums;)

I can literally tell you that after you buy the DCC versions of anything that you normally like on MFSL or any other label for that matter you'll be wanting to sell your MFSL's or whatever.

Steve's Jethro Tull's just squash the MFSL's, and yes I've done side by side comparisons.

Just for fun and to prove it to yourself pick up the Canadian version of The Who: Who's Next MCABD-37217 for under $10.00 from HMV or one of the other many on-line stores down there and then compare it to the MFSL or the MCA gold cds or even the remastered version and that will give you a really good indication of Steve's other works as they're all the best versions on this planet anyways. (IMHO) of course.:D

The Beach Boys and Ray Charles DCC releases are some of my favourites :) .

Don't forget Erich Wolfgang Korngold's "Golden Age Of Film Music" conducted by Lionel Newman. :D

You know Steve, I know that post was tounge in cheek but... I own that album though and I like the music and think the sound is great. Just another kudos to you. I get shivers every time I play several of the cuts on here. Thanks for your work.

Only slightly tounge in cheek. I love that album too!

I know the Beach Boys stuff has been mentioned, but I'll second that the DCC Pet Sounds strikes me as the only Spiritually Correct version. Occasionally I'll "cheat", and listen to some brighter, mono masterings of the earlier stuff (sounds more like it's coming out of your dashboard, you know?), but Steve's Pet Sounds is appropriately dark, tubey and melancholic and renders the stereo version a mere curiosity. In a perfect world, we'd have a Hoffman mono "Don't Worry Baby", but the Razor & Tie "Heroes and Villains" makes up for it...

The world would also be a poorer place without the DCC versions of Highway 61 and McCartney's Ram.

I "cheat" too! I love the Japanese CD albums (card sleeves) and the Japanese "Singles" box (Capitol TOCP 7771~73) - a crisp sound rather than the tube sound. Also, the singles box is all mono (except for "Breakaway" b/w "Celebrate The News" and the "Little Saint Nick" true stereo take).

However, the DCC "Pet Sounds" (CD or Vinyl) is the ultimate experience for Wilson freaks like me :D.

And you know what's really, really nice?

When you crank up Van Halen's first and feel Eddies incrediable guitar work and you don't have to reach for a Kleen-ex to stop the bleeding in your ears.:D

Excellent work by the way Steve!;)

Some more rock suggestions with notes:

Parallel Lines by Blondie (only place you'll find the extended mix of "Heart of Glass" in good sound on CD)

Bob Dylan's "Highway 61 Revisited" (IMO, the best DCC title to get)

Stage Fright by the Band (the actual first-generation tapes, not the "remixes" by Glyn Johns; Rob Bowman gets it wrong in his liner notes for the Stage Fright 2000 reissue)

Joni Mitchell's "Blue" and "Court & Spark" (even better than the HDCD reissues)

Scott,
You can't go wrong with any of the suggestions on the board, My two cents; Any Doors, any Miles Davis, any Wes Montgomery, the Everly Brothers' Best, Elton John's Greatest Hits. My LP choice would be Elton John's Madman Across the Water. Have fun finding and listening to the music. Scott, don't hurry, some of these titles are going for a preimuim. Shop for them, don't always just buy, it more fun.:)

Thanks for all of the suggestions. This is what I have started with, Elton John's Greatest Hits, Linda Ronstadt's Greatest Hits, The Cars Greatest Hits (all are on backorder at Amazon & HMV, I hope they can get them for me). I also purchased Erich Wolfgang Korngold's "Golden Age Of Film Music", which came highly reccomended.
I would also like an opinion on the "Juanita Hall Sings The Blues" LP and does anyone know the ETA of the Current Restoration/Mastering Projects?

I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for Amazon. DCC releases are getting expensive, I watched LA Woman (vinyl) sell for $112.50 on ebay today. If you really want DCC vinyl be prepared to pay up. Now having said that I think anything DCC ever released blows away any other version of that title. My favorites are Jazz Samba and Pet Sounds.

Scott,
As others have intimated, it's more a problem of actually finding the titles, then deciding which ones you want. In my experience, when a DCC item is listed as "backordered" at an internet site, it rarely, if ever, comes in. Then if you see it elsewhere, you don't know whether to buy it and potentially duplicate or wait for the "backorder". As a result, I will only order it if it's listed as in stocl or available within 7 days. It's been mentioned here before, but I would recommend checking www.musicforasong.com. They have a bunch of DCC cut outs at very reasonable prices.

Happy Hunting!
