Anything special about this disc? (besides the swapped sides) I just picked it up today, and so far it doesn't sound terribly different from my old Castle.

David,
How much, if any, of this CD is in STEREO?

There are 2 distinct PRT Cd versions: a UK version with swapped sides and a German version in the correct running order. I own them both and they have comperable sound quality. They are both in true stereo.
Only about half the cuts on the stereo album are in stereo, and it's pretty narrow stereo. Little Miss Queen of Darkness varies the most from the mono version.
...thanks xios, I would've suspected about the same (regarding Stereo content!).
Douglas, please check again (thru headphones) if it is, in fact, True Stereo. I am always hopefull that most/all of the early Kinks material will eventually surface in True Stereo!
Maybe Shel Talmy will move on to The Kinks tape archives, after he gets The Who out in Stereo! One can hope so, anyway!

the Something Else cd was mono, unlike my $3.99 vinyl euro copy. No bass on the cd, i felt burned when I bought it.
My Village Green cd is a better mono transfer; followed by the stereo mixes, and they are dubbed from a vinyl source! It was relatively clean, but I remember thinking "where the hell are the tapes?"
I did not buy Face To Face after that as I was fearing the worst after those two.

ARe you sure you're talking about the PRTs? Sounds like you're talking about the recent Castle reissues...the Village Green stereo mix on that CD is a vastly different alternate, and thus only an acetate or something of the sort still exists.
Re. Face to Face, I wish I had my old Castle CD here to compare with this PRT version...does anybody knows whether the old Castle and the PRT stereo versions differ in any way?
(And, BTW, I have the one with the sides swapped)

Pat, the ENTIRE CD is in true stereo. I have listened with headphones to both German and UK PRT CDs. Not all tracks have wide separation, so not all of it is dramatic stereo, but it's all in in true stereo. Compare them to the US LP and you'll see what a difference in sound it is.

See my previous post. I am talking about the European 1980s PRT issues. Sounds like you're referring to the more recent issues.

Your Village Green is not on PRT. The only CD issue of it with the mono and stereo albums is the more recent 1990s new Castle remaster. It may say PRT somewhere on the disc but you have the new master on Essential/Castle. The sound isn't comperable to the superior 1980s issue.

David, good news. They are the same.
I wonder if I've posted enough in this thread today......
My 1986 copy of PRT Face to Face has Party Line in mono except for the opening telephone ring and voice, Dandy is essentially mono with some echo on the left channel, House in the Country is mono, Sunny Afternoon is the regular 45 mono version, and I'll Remember is mono. The rest of the CD varies from slight stereo with echo to the left and right (Most Exclusive...), to fair separation (Fancy,Rainy Day In June). I like the old PRT better than any 90's remaster.
