View Full Version : Got Really Lucky Today

I just had to jump in as your newest member to say that I hit a jackpot (well, to me anyway) at the local Borders where I occasionally browse. I passed up a copy of Ella Fitzgerald sings the Cole Porter Songbook well over a year ago, and have since been kicking myself. Anyhow, for some reason today, I happened to glance at the top of one of their cassette displays and noticed the Ella set looking back at me!! If it weren't up there, some other lucky soul would have bought it long ago.

Well, I'm excited because I borrowed the Volume II disc of this set from the local library in'93 and was instantly hooked. My wife and I actually had "You Do Something To Me" as our wedding song in '94. Popping the DCC version in today (Valentines day no less) and hearing the tune in all its glory just brought back so many great memories. I wish Ella were still with us, because I'd like to personally tell her much her music means to me. I would like to thank you Steve for taking the great care you do when mastering these great artists works. And ain't it my luck that you mastered this particular one and not the umpteen other songbooks or albums she did? Well, if you do them all, I guess I wouldn't complain a bit!

By the way, I finally got off the fence and decided to join the forum here. I've been learning a lot from all of you. Actually, I've been browsing the DCC boards since the days of the fully expanded message threads (ugh..). But such great content - were those ever archived? Boy, I hope so. Thank goodness for these great BBS systems, eh?

Hi Mike,

Thanks for hopping off the fence!

So you found the DCC Ella, eh? Neat. That's always been my favorite Ella songbook; nice crisp full-track mono, recorded at the old Capitol Melrose Ave. Studio, pre Tower...

Enjoy it!

Hmmm, now let me get this straight. You "got really lucky" today because you found the DCC Ella CD, or was it the fact that you played it for your wife, and er, um... Oh never mind... :D Well, after all, it IS Valentine's day!!!

Congrats! It's alway a great feeling when we find that missing link in our collection! Unfortunately there are many for me. LOL.

Kevin...

Are you wishin' you had that DCC Ella CD or was it a lovely wife you were wishin' on? :p

As hard as they are to come by... I think the Ella CD is an easier find. Steve has already taken all the work out of it for us... A perfect CD to be sure. All we have to do is find one...

The perfect wife is a bit trickier... You have to do all the work yourself!

:D :D

Larry... Are you trying to say that there is NO perfect man for AudioGirl? :( Or that there are no perfect men in general?

Eh, that's OK... I'm not looking for PERFECT anyway.... I'm happy with less flawed then most. :D

Audiogirl, I'm sure that there is a perfect man for you but I don't think he will be able to walk on water. Hopefuly he will also have a love for music.

Oh boy!!!

This is great news!!! You heard it here first folks... on the the Steve Hoffman forum...

P.S. Larry... How could he be perfect unless he has a love for music?? :p

Hi Audiogirl. Actually I guess I already have the "perfect" wife... This year marks our 20th Wedding Anniversary. If she can put up with my ***** for that long, well that's pretty much perfect! :) Not to mention her WAF is the most liberal of all of my friends... Now that's true love! :D

Hey AudioGirl,

Aren't you married already? I seem to recall you saying that a while back.

Kevin,

Can I borrow your spouses WAF for a while?;)

LOL! I was referring to the discs. With 2 very little kids in the house, things just ain't what they used to be! Getting lucky among audiophiles is a whole different ballgame, I guess...

My philosophy on life comes off the back of a wine bottle I read one time where it said:

Imperfections within the glass are not defects but merely your guarantee of the authenticity of its handcrafted nature.

Borders seems to be a particularly good source for DCCs, including the aluminums. I found both Waylon discs and both Willie discs there.
