View Full Version : How do I record onto Cooledit Pro using my computer's cd drive?

I hope someone out there can help me.
I'm having trouble trying to figure out how to record portions of CDs into Cooledit Pro.

I have a Dell computer with a CD-Rom drive as well as a second drive that is my CD burner. Both drives will 'play' CDs through either Media-Player or through my CD Jukebox player. No problem there.

But if I open up the CD player that is in Cooledit Pro and hit record, nothing records as I'm playing a CD through Media-Player, or whatever.

I want to do some radio production work, so I want to record portions of music and sound effects to mix with my voice. I record my voice through a SM-58 that is hooked to a small mixer plugged directly into my sound card.
Unfortunately, I don't have an external CD player at the moment that I can hook up to the mixer---so that option is out.

The only way I have been able to dump CDs into Cooledit Pro is to use my Roxio CD Creator software by loading a track into the computer, saving it as a 'Hard Disc Image' as if I'm going to burn a CD, then open up the saved file as a Wavefile in Cooledit Pro.

There HAS to be an easier way of doing this. I'm sure I'm just missing something really simple. Do I have to change a configuration in my SoundCard? What Am I doing wrong? For the production work I want to do, I only want to record 30-60 seconds of CD tracks. By going through the trouble of using Roxio's CD Creator, you have to scan the entire track.
This makes it even more trouble.

Please help, and thank you all in advance!
Thanks a million!!!!

Your better off "extracting" the sound from the CD. Under the File dropdown menu, then select Extract Audio from CD....

You should be able to read (or "open") the tracks right off the disc using "File", "Open", select the drive. Cool Edit has a CD digital audio extractor built in, assuming you have v2.0 or v2.1. You'll see the tracks listed like usual in the Open File dialog - Track01.cda, Track02.cda, etc..., but then Cool Edit will extract the file in full 16bit digital form. The you can then cut to the parts you want and save as wave files.

I was going to suggest 'ripping' the audio tracks with an external program, but I see you've already tried it.

You shouldn't have any problems recording the output of your CD drive onto CoolEdit. First thing to check (if you haven't already) is the Recording Settings section on your soundcard's (or Windows') mixer.

Check Windows' mixer; go to Properties from the 'Options' menu and you should get a dialog box with some option buttons which read 'Playback', 'Recording', .. choose Recording and click OK.

The mixer should've changed (it defaults to 'Playback'); find the slider for 'CD-ROM', 'CD Audio' or some other such name (they vary from one soundcard to another).

Below the slider (where the 'Mute' checkbox was in Playback mode) you should see a 'Select' checkbox; click on it.

Get a CD playing in the drive, go back to CoolEdit and press F10 (the 'monitor input' option .. I think it's F10); do you get any signal in the meters?

If so, you should be set; if not, post again with some further details.

These guys are right. But, as mentioned, the ability of "ripping" CDs only exists in version 2.0/2.1.

You have been doing it the very hard way!
