Were MFSL discs always sold with J cards? I've seen a few sealed without the J card. Was this MFSL's version of a cutout, or a rewrap?

Hi Andy,

all of the Ultradisc MFSL CD were sold without
j-card, most of the Ultradisc II versions were
sold with j-card. I guess the first UD II copies
always came without j-card, and from time to time the j-cards were just "out of stock".

Sorry to butt in here Joachim.

MFSL when they were going out of business ran out of the J-cards and also ran out of the UD2 packaging for some of the albums so they just wrapped them without the J-cards, as well as put some in UD1 packages (paper work) and sent them out.;)

Okay, I'll probably kick myself later for this being a stupid question, but what the heck, i need a few more posts to move out of "junior member" status anyway...

What's a J-card?

I thought that happened when they started to press the CDs in the USA. Typical examples for UD II copies without j-card are "Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon" and "Steely Dan - Aja". I guess both were long out of print when MFSL went out of business. I saw a lot of "early" UD I artwork and UD II CD combinations, e.g. "Jethro Tull - Stand Up" and "Allman Brothers - Eat a Peach".

A j-card is a piece of paper with some information about the Ultradisc II (!) format and the available titles. When it is wrapped around the jewelcase it looks like a "j" from a certain perspective.

Andy,

Just to console you a bit my man....

I've purchased 2 copies of Tom Petty: Hard Promises that were sealed and said Ultradisc and much to my dismay they were both the UD2 versions.

This is why now I won't buy any MFSL that I'm specifically looking for on UD1 that's sealed, at least without opening it right in front of the store owner. Sorry you've been had.

Buyer beware really applies in this particular situation.

I have a sealed Dark Side Ultradisc II with a J card. I'm kinda wondering what's inside that one.

My suggestion Andy is to sell that sucker on ebay, for the huge bucks it'll surely get, because hardly anyone knows the difference between the UD1/UD2 except for this forum of course, and then buy yourself an open but mint UD1. With any luck you'll have some money left over.:D ;)
