View Full Version : 2nd Death of vinyl????
My local hifi dealer is a major Krell fanatic, I was in the store a few weeks ago when he sold a 41k system no turntable included. His reasoning is that vinyl is not necessary and maybe even undesirable in a "modern" system. For all of the things vinyl has going for it convenience is not one of them(I'd sorta agree on that one). Even so I still prefer vinyl. This is a major (for Montana anyway) dealer and he doesn't even stock turntables, and does not go out of his way to sell any. So I ask everyone willing to answer. Has anyone out there bought a turntable, tonearm,or cartridge or any other analog type equipment recently? If the hi end dealers stop selling analog equipment how long can the people selling vinyl survive?

Well, this might make you feel better. Look at all these groovy new turntables that were at CES:

It will take a little while to load...
Thanks for the link, now I have a reason to get up in the morning.

Ok... I love funky cool turntables as much as the next guy... but isn't this one just a *little* over the top? :)

That kind of stuff looks nice and it might even sound good, but how many of those things do they sell?

I bought all of the above within the past year. Got a Rega Planar 3 with RB300 arm. And three different cartridges, in fact (an inexpensive Benz Micro, and two Dynavector 10x4's).
I was actually able to go out and look at several turntables in stores before I made my choice. I can't help but wonder, though, how long vinyl-related products will continue to be readily available ... Will you still be able to find cartridges and such in 5, 10, 20, 30 years? I've actually had the thought that I should stock up on a lifetime's supply of belts, cartridges and cleaning supplies now while I still can ...

Well, I didn't buy it new, but I got a new-to-me VPI HW-19 Mk.IV from Ebay, with a JMW-10 tonearm. I bought a new Clearaudio Aurum Beta "S" cart for it. Maybe I'll buy an extra arm tube for the JMW so I can have a mono cart on hand also. And there are a couple of upgrades available for this turntable. It should keep me happy for a while, until I can afford one of Andy Peyor's designs, you know when I'm about 80 or so. :D

P.S. Love the pic of the Clearaudio Master Reference with a Spinal Tap picture disc sitting on it.

I agree that the Vyger Atlantis looks over the top and I sure wouldn't want to spend $1,000+ for a turntable.

Let me know if anyone is taking apart a bank vault in Massachusetts. I could use the parts for my next turntable!

Anybody have heard the Rockport Sirius III turntable... extended gallery at

I just recieved Mikey's Rockport CDR from the phonogram user group list...My request took about 6 months, but I finally got it. I'd burn you a copy, but I don't have a CDR burner.......
It's funny "Smells like Teen Spirit" burned from the mofi vinyl sounds better than the gold cd...........Go figure..........

I noticed that after you get over the MFSL vinyl, after "Smells Like Teen Spirit", things sonically get a LOT better!

Exactly what kind of damage could I do to my 12" singles trying to scratch with one of these things?? Do they have special DJ cartridges for these???

hehe... it'd be fun to see someone try to scratch with one of these. The platter looks like it weights 400 pounds - you'd have to be a gorilla to get that thing to stop in anything under 10 seconds. ;)
