Any suggestion as to what I can get for under a thousand dollars? I need two speakers, not floor models though, just the kind you put on speaker stands. I also need a dedicated amp and a CD or SACD player. Overall quality is important and I am not interested in lots of bells and whistles. Any help here?
Thanks
Rob

You might look into Acoustic Energy's 'Aego' systems, which are a powered subwoofer and small satellites for the mid/highs:

They have line level inputs for a CD/SACD/DVD player and you're ready to go. I have one set up with the TV and DVD player as our bedroom system and it really puts out some decent sound for being so small. The MSRP is around $599 but they are commonly had for closer to $400.

Here is a site (http://www.acoustic-energy.co.uk/products/aego/aegoloudspeakers.html) for them. Technical specs are lacking, but I've been quite happy with this setup for my subsidiary system. Coupled with a decent player you could come in well under $1000 - even have enough to buy some SACDs:)
