Hello all, this is my first post here. I have just about completed my acquistion of a duplicate to my 70's bi amped system.
Mac C20 pre amp
ESS 500A power amp for lows
Dynaco ST70 for the highs
ESS AMT 1A tower speakers (transmission line)
Micro Acoustics 2002e cartridge
Pyramid Electronic crossover and AR EC2 tube crossover (I keep switching) still looking for a ESS Eclipse 2240 electronic crossover to complete the original 70's system.

I am now thinking of running tubes on the woofers instead of the ESS 500A (500 watts per channel at 4 ohms).

I was thinking of getting a MAC MC275 or the Citation II, yet I saw the post on the MC240 and was just wondering if the 240 is preferred over the 275 and HK Citation II. Also curious if you believe the tubes will sound better on the woofers. (all tube system)

I currently have a few extra Dynaco ST70's, yet believe I will need a bit more power for the low end.
Grovers on order :-)

Thanks,
Clay

Clay, welcome.

If you are going to bi-amp, keep it the way it is. No need to tube the bottom IMO.....

I wouldn't say that too loudly around here -- people will come running asking you to sell them one.

Like me. Wanna sell me one? I'd like to have a second ST70 to biamp the bass of my Magnepans. ;)

Anyway, welcome to our lively community, Clay. It sounds like you have a dandy system.

Hi Jeffrey,
I set out to duplicate my 1970 vintage system. Now I am finding that I am still searching for a better sound :-). The Curcio modified ST70 is on a desk next to the system and used for the AMTs. I am getting some Grover cables and will be hooking up the big ESS amp on the left speaker tonight (hopefully). I also want to experiment with speaker cables. I just picked up the TD124 in the Pic and hope to see how it works tonight also. I could not find a set of the towers so I drove 100 miles to buy just 1 empty box for $20. I bought a table saw and spend endless hours reverse engineering the box and duplicated it exactly. I picked up some original woofers and had them reconed with ferro fluid voice coils then parted out my amt1 pyramids and saved the amts. I have picked up some Telefunken 12AX7 for the Mac and some RCA black plates for tube rolling. The Sony Cassette deck sounds just like a record with a MFSL cassette in it. I just wish I had more room to make it easier to swap out pieces. I may have a bit of bass distortion in the left channel so I may send the C20 in for a checkup. Possibly to Joe Curcio in San Jose. Here goes for posting a picture.
This is sure a great forum and I plan to do a lot of reading since I plan to become an expert on Hi-Fi and home theatre once again like I was in the early 70's. There is just a lot more to know these days!

In case you ever wondered what the transmission line inside the ESS AMT tower looks like, I have posted a picture for you. I still need to tweak with the polyfill dampening.
I guess the st70's are not extra at this point. I will post here before offering on ebay.
