View Full Version : Either my Roxio software or LG burner isn't working. Help!

After attempting 4 burns, I stopped as I am wasting blank CD-Rs.
My burner is an LG 32x. I have never had a problem with it. The software is what came with the burner, Roxio Easy CD Creator 5.
When I record, I always shut all apps down first, reboot, start up again, clean.
Computer is 1800 IIRC, 80 and 20GB hard drives, 256 RAM, Windows 2000, etc.
I always use the "Disc At Once" function. It is needed for the current needle drop I'm recording, as some live tracks are involved that join together.
What appears to be happening is when Roxio starts the burn, it is immediately going to track 1, instead of the usual "Table of Contents" stuff, which it normally does first, if you are using the "Disc At Once" function. The burn goes for about 5 seconds and then errors out.
I even tried some other data and a different brand of disc. I usually use TD 80min 48x discs. I also tried an LG 80min disc. Attached is a screen cap of the error messages.
I have not had one problem with this burner since installing it late last fall.
Can anyone help, please?
Thanks in advance.

Odd, my friend Gord and I just tried a test. We were successful in "testing" a CD copy. So, this means I can copy two CDs, but cannot burn any music files from the hard drive onto a blank CD-R.
BTW, Roxio's solution to this problem is goofy. It says "...it's just a mp3 converting issue. Easy Cd Creator's mp3 decoder can only decompress mp3's made using 128kbps..." Great, but I'm not using any mp3s. It's all CD rips using Exact Audio Copy and needle drops recorded in CoolEdit Pro.

I don't know if this will help or not but, try downloading Adaptec ASPI drivers, new version (4.71) and install them.
Also make sure you have all the updates loaded for Windows 2000 and Roxio Easy CD Creator 5
ASPI Drivers (
http://www.adaptec.com/worldwide/support/drivers_by_product.html?cat=/Product/ASPI-4.70)
You may want to step down to Roxio Easy CD Creator 4.

Thanks for the information.
I extracted that zipped file and have no idea where it downloaded to. The latest Microsoft updates were also installed. Computer was rebooted and nothing. Still cannot burn any music wav files.

This is really getting ugly. I stepped down to Adaptec Easy CD Creator 4. Then I went to Roxio's Web site for the latest and greatest updates, drivers, etc. Easy CD Creator 4 did not, and since the upgrade, still, will not recognize my burner.

I have had no problems running CD Creator 5 with Win2000.
Alan had a good idea, though. Update your ASPI layer and install any update patches there may be for that version of CD Creator.
Also, check to see if there are any firmware updates for your burner.
There IS a possibility that your burner is going south. Burners act strange when they die.
See if you can install another burner to check. See if you can install your burner in another PC. Try some other CD burning software.
Think, is there ANYTHING you have done to your PC since now and the last time your burner worked with CD Creator? Have you installed any downloaded any programs? Have you installed any new hardware? Anything? Has anyone else had access to your PC and maybe screwed something up?

Me neither until now.

Yes, good idea. I found and ran all the updates yesterday, including:
1. Roxio CD Creator upgrade to 5.3.5.
2. ASPI 471a2.exe
3. Microsoft updates for Windows 2000, which happened to show up by coincidence while the Easy CD Creator 5 software was acting up.

Grant, thank you for the suggestion. I'm a little weary about firmware updates. My previous burner was an LG 12x. Last fall when I upgraded from Windows 98 to 2000 (my old system before the December crash), the burner wouldn't burn at anything over about 6x. In Windows 98, I was always able to get a full 12x burn, if I wanted to. An IT guy who was in one of my job clubs, came over one day to look at this issue. He went to LG.com's Web site and downloaded the firmware update for LG's 12x burner. After he ran the update, the burner seized to work. I get on the phone with LG Canada's 800 tech help desk. The tech tells me that the firmware update on the U.S. Web site is actually faulty. He tells me if we had gone to LG.ca we would have seen a warning message telling us that the firmware update had been removed. I had to buy another burner. That is how I ended up with the LG 32x.

No just me!
Used to work a bit in IT and used to be a software test so I ran a series of test to try and narrow down the problem. In doing this, I started to see that Easy CD Creator 5 and the LG burner worked when burning in other modes, such as:
an mp3 file disc
mp3 to wav conversion for a music CD-R
wav file to CD-R as data
CD to CD-R copy
and then the BIG ONE, another, different batch of wav files to music CD-R
Everything was working except the group of wav files that were involved with the original error. SO, I began to look at the wav files, beginning to think that one or more might be corrupted. Half of this CD-R disc was wav files ripped from CD. The other half was wav files from a series of needle drops of various LPs and 45s.
To cut a long story short  , it turns out that the needle drop files were somehow converting in Cool Edit Pro to 32 bits. Probably one of those late nights on the computer recently, and I must have inadvertently clicked the "Convert to 32 bit" check box in the Options/Settings/Data tab, dialog box. That box is now unchecked!
Everything appears to be OK, as I just completed a burn of the wav files in question.
Thank you Grant and Alan, both, for your time. :)

Miike, we have all accidentally tried to unknowingly burn 32-bit files. I always leave "convert to 32-bit" unchecked in Cool Edit too. If I want to go 32-bit, I do it myself.
