Hi everybody out there in the land of gold and vinyl! Here’s this weeks Top 40 chart, but first a quick message. In order to keep with my plan of posting a chart each week from a week with the same Saturday date, I have run into a snag. The problem is that the dates begin to all fall in the same three or four years. Boring! So this week will be the last from an exact date (unless I happen to find one that has interesting songs).

Now this week we go way, way back to 1963. These were somewhat dark times in radioland. Elvis was back from the Army but he didn’t seem to have quite as much fire as before. The Beach Boys' next 45 hadn’t been released yet and it was almost a year before we got our first taste of The Beatles. However, in Liverpool the boys must have been listening to us because they covered one of today’s tunes on their second LP.

So here you have it, the top 10 songs in the U.S. for February 9, 1963. Popular music yes, but hardly rock ‘n’ roll.

1. Hey Paula………………………….............Paul & Paula
2. Walk Right In………………………..........The Rooftop Singers
3. The Night Has A Thousand Eyes…...Bobby Vee
4. Loop De Loop………………………..........Johnny Thunder
5. Up On The Roof…………………….........The Drifters
6. Walk Like A Man…………………...........The 4 Seasons
7. Ruby Baby…………………………............Dion
8. You’ve Really Got A Hold Of Me…....The Miracles
9. Rhythm Of The Rain………………........The Cascades
10. Go Away Little Girl……………….........Steve Lawrence

I'm embarrassed to say I can sing the opening bars (and a bit more) of all those songs!

As you say - not rock 'n roll. Well, maybe "Walk Like A Man" is the most upbeat, though "You've Really Got a Hold on Me" has a nice rhythm. Frankie Valli had a most incredible voice. My brother and I had quite a few Four Seasons LPs in the early sixties, but we switched our allegiance to 4 lads from Liverpool.
