In your opinion what are the most important girl groups in rock n roll history.a couple of weeks ago i saw ronnie spector being interviewed.myself i always thought that in the eary 60's the Ronnetes were important to the early rock n roll beginnings.in the 1970's i thought Heart with ann and nancy wilson were the best girl group even though they had a couple of guys in the band..the GO-GO's in the 1980's were tops for the time.Who else do you rate as some of th best and most important girl groups.

The Supremes, definitely. I gotta go with the Runaways as well. Not that I like Joan or Lita all that much, but they did sort of set things off, or create an attitude if you will.
Heart. The best!

Anything Phil and Larry did. I also like the Donnas very much, but they're not a classic group at all. They just signed to Atlantic.

Your guys picked all the good ones. What's left? What about the The GTO's? ;) Groupies don't count? :( They put the groups in groupies, literally. :D ;)
There have been some good "coed" groups with girl frontmen, uh, frontwomen, such as Blondie, Jefferson Airplane, Renaissance. I won't pick Fleetwood Mac with Stevie and Christine because to me, the Original Peter Green's was the real thing. :)

Here's some that are good and/or influential - Shangri-Las, Shirelles, Sweet Inspirations, Martha & The Vandellas, Raincoats, Slits, Bangles, Sleater-Kinney, Pink Lady, Josie & The Pussycats.
If you are talking about the 60's, the first thing you should get (assuming you haven't already) is Dusty Springfield's Dusty In Memphis. I will give you your money back if you don't love it. :)

The Marvelettes have to be amongst the most underrated.
Please, Mr. Postman, Beechwood 4-5789, Too Many Fish In The Sea, I'll Keep Holding On, Danger Heartbreak Dead Ahead, Don't Mess With Bill, My Baby Must Be A Magician, and The Hunter Gets Captured By The Game all are worthy of any 'Best of Motown' comp....at least any one that I am burning. :)

Heart! Who elso? I love the Wilson sister's "Dreamboat Annie". What a wonderful album, especially Steve Hoffman's gold version. Incredible. By the way, I also loved the movie "Almost Famous" by Cameron Crowe. What a surprise when I realized that he is married to Nancy Wilson!
A propos Wilson: I guess Brian Wilson may have opted for the Ronettes, of course because of their "Be My Baby"... which is one great record, too.

I don't know this one...I am a big Motown fan but did not grow up during the period, so I come to all this stuff second-hand. The only Shorty I own is a single or two (e.g. Devil with a Blue Dress) on some comps. I always appreciate any recommendations.
On a Motown note, I just picked up (and am making my way through) Bill Dahl's new book Motown:The Golden Years, and will be trying to figure out how to best collect the lesser known Motown artists (e.g. Short Long)...
To be important do they have to be old enough to be my parents, or even grandparents?
