Are there any good "starter" kits for 5.1, or should I build one from scratch? I already have the DVD player, so I don't need one of those crappy $159 dollar jobs with the player built in. I don't have a ton of money to do this though. I have Boston Acoustics speakers for my regular system, but I don't think most 5.1 systems will have a phono stage for me to set up my turntable, this creating more problems and the need for two separate systems.

I am trying to reconfigure my tiny apartment so I can attempt to do this. I don't have a ton of room, but I think I figured out a way I can accomplish this while still having my stereo setup as well.

Thanks,

BOB

The SONY Dream Home Theater Systems are very good for small/medium sized rooms.

Also check out hifi.com for nice Cambridge Soundworks 5.1 home systems.

bob,

the 5.1 systems out there could almost be the definition of "underperformers". Specilaity stereo stores are beginning to like them, as many people who have bought one and realise they don't sound any good end (especially on music) up spending a bit more and buying something half-way decent.

Any advice will really be dependent on what you're trying to achieve. From your profile I see you have a reasonablle turntable and speakers (no amp listed). Are you trying to improve your music performace (if so, an all-in-one system won't do it). Are you wanting better movie sound? If so, have you tried plugging your DVD player into your amp?

5.1 "wonder" kits are fine if you wish to do something to start out.

But oh, man. Anyone can do better than buy one!
