Here's some new news about Mariah Carey's old record company:

Independent (UK) reports: EMI Records to be scrapped as profits slump (http://enjoyment.independent.co.uk/music/news/story.jsp?story=118905)

Also note a link to an interesting Frank Sinatra recording at the bottom, etc.

This isn't exactly surprising or even new news. The U.S. division of EMI Records was shuttered in 1997.

This actually is new news. This isn't just the puny US EMI shutting down, this is the *British* EMI. Big difference.

I wonder if they'll keep the imprint alive for catalog titles.

Parlophone wasn't mentioned there, wonder if it will close down too (or maybe it already has)?

It's just the EMI label, not the whole company. It's like if Warners dumped the Reprise label.

Well, really, whats the difference?

Universal doesnt put anything out on the DECCA or Brusnwick labels in the US anymore.

All you really NEED is one label if you own catalog product

The only thing that matters is that the stuff GETS ISSUED, and doesnt sit in a dark vault somewhere!!

It's the nostalgic thing, Mikey.

I wonder how this will impact on any new future Apple releases (like remasters) by the you-know-who?

I think you have to remember, that just because a label closes a division, they can STILL issue catalog product using the old label graphic.

EMI could still issue CDs with an "EMI" or "Parlophone" label, because they own the copyright.

The "official" cat # just wouldnt have EMI in the title.

If you remember, EMI did just that on its "Legendary Masters" series......some of the CDs had beautiful repros of the IMPERIAL, (billy j kramer) DOLTON (The Ventures) LIBERTY (Bobby Vee), labels, which were long gone by the 90s.

As for me, I prefer that "Capitol Swirl" myself......

Yeah, I know that. Sony is notorious for doing it. What I was talking about was the business dealings.

And they will...It all boils down to the buck!
