Steve, I've decided to ask for your help. You are the undispute king of the soundwaves and obviously an avid collector of vintage gear. What I would like to ask you is if you would make some recommendations for a system I would like to build based on the type of sound I like and my musical tastes. Although my listening is all over the map, from reggae, jazz, and classical, to country and heavy metal, I listen to primarily British rock and power pop from the '60s and '70s and alternative rock from the '80s. As a musician, I tend to like things detailed and revealing, but I also like the sound a little on the warm side of natural. I don't have to have tons of bass, but it must be punchy, taught, and defined and capable of kicking me in the chest when I crank up the volume. So far I am thinking of a pair of Spendor BC1s, a Michell Gyro Hydraulic Reference, some hotrod stuff from Grover in terms of amplification or perhaps the Marantz 8b if I can find one, an old Nakamichi cassette deck, and an original Rega Planet cd player. Now you are no doubt much more familiar with this path than I am. Would you please take pity on a poor and disgruntled audiophile and make some recommendations on various pieces? I desparately need a system that sounds good to me.
