The Wall St journal had a really interesting article today about the Industrys answer to Napster.

They have launched Two new music downlaoding services, and judging by what I read, they are both DOOMED!!!

Check this:

1)Music Net:

10 bucks per month. 100 streams, 100 "crippled" downloads.
the songs EXPIRE (right there, its useless) after 30 days, and CANNOT be stored on a portable device.

Are they KIDDING??? jeezzz.......totally, completely useless.

2)Pressplay

3 diff plans, 3 diff costs per month.
The more expensibe one allows:

10 to 20 songs "burnable" per month (Geez! not even a full Cds worth!)

CANT d/l more than TWO songs by the same artist (WHAT!!!!!)

Very limited selection, even tho their advertising would have you
believe they offer thousands of songs.

<<<<<<
These d/l models are completely and totally worthless. When, oh WHEN will they GET IT!!! One fee, UNLIMITED DOWNLOADS, that DONT EXPIRE!!! and that can be copied to a portable Device!!!

WHATs SO HARD!!!!???/

Has anyone else here tried emusic.com?
It's a great service with very reasonable rates (as little as $10/mo for unlimited mp3 downloads that you can burn or do whatever you want with them). I'm mostly into jazz, and they have a great selection of Prestige/Riverside/OJC stuff.
The only problem with them is that their mp3 encoding is pretty bad. They've apparently changed encoder programs recently and the quality has improved quite a bit, but overall I've been very happy with their product and service.

I've known about this for a year, now. The record execs and lawyers are so out of it they think this can work. Oh, they'll probably get about 50-100 stupid subscribers, then fold up the venture as a loss in six months.

Actually, cmusic sounds like a winner if I can find what I want. Oh, I don't pretend to think i'm actually going to get any big-time artists with hit songs...

mp3 sound is not up to much, thats a fact.
check out:

www.etree.org

for a fuller explanation.

Is SHN the future? Certainly for live and quality recordings.

If it is the industry is barking up the wrong tree; how comical.

Well, etree sounds good at first glance, then you see this message:

A quick note about downloading SHN files from etree.org FTP servers: Please realize that there are many, many more people attempting to download SHN files than there are providing server logins. For this reason, it may take you many, many hours to gain access to a server, especially during peak hours. Unfortunatly, this is a way of life for members of the announce mailing list.

>>>hey, I dont have "Many many hours" to waste. in that time one could d/l hundreds, if not thousands of MP3 files!!!

For those that use EAC, that can be used as a front end to shrtn32.exe which makes the .shn files available at etree.org and etree has a plugin for WinAmp that enables it to play .shn's easily.

For those .shn supporters, I do have an .shn of the Dark Side of The Moon deal that Holy Zoo posted.

It looks the obituaries are already being written for the majors' online offerings:

These d/l models are completely and totally worthless. When, oh WHEN will they GET IT!!! One fee, UNLIMITED DOWNLOADS, that DONT EXPIRE!!! and that can be copied to a portable Device!!! And which record companies will allow that to happen? What if they charged $200 a month, and you get access to 200 songs, which you can copy and keep. Would you go for that?

Why not give free sample "snippets" of tracks, and if people like them they can go buy the CD? They'd get the whole song and better sound.

>>>The SMART ones that would actually care about what the consumers want and not what some sales exec says.

DiVX! Part Duex (audio version)? Some imbeciles just never learn (or learn too well). Are these the same nitwits who almost sank Circuit City? They must have gone through the same dummy crash tests training.

I'll opt for plan 4.

I'll opt for plan 4 as well. Sorry to be a party-pooper, but running around into Napster wanna-bees and trying to download music via MP3 from 3rd party services is not the way to get yer music. It's just silly and childish. Don't lower yourself into this mentality.

It's not a morality issue for me, it's the sense that mp3 is fun, but trying to rely and pay for a service to GIVE you music is lame and boring. Yet your ya-yas out and buy a CD or LP. Hey, not knocking the MP3 format, but be REAL about music you feel REAL about.

This would be the sonic equivilent of AOL. Instead of having the freedom and eagerness of finding good music on your own, you're SERVED it on a plate, and you eat it with a lot missing nutritionally.. It's corporate advertised pre-heated poop. Don't get fooled again.

I'm real sorry. I get a little bent out of shape when people start jumping on a dumb bandwagon. :(
