View Full Version : Got a CD stuck in my car player

I have a McIntosh stereo in my Subaru. It's one of the reasons why I bought the damn car. There has been a crackle in the front driver side speaker when I adjust the volume since I bought the car. I keep telling the dealer that it's a short. They have replaced the speaker and finally replaced the stereo unit but the crackle is still there. It's only when I adjust the volume but it's a pain in the butt and every time I take the car in it's there for a week.

Now I have a CD stuck in the player. It's a burned one with a stomped label. Probably a mistake. Won't play and won't eject.

Any advice out there on the hostage CD and/or the elusive crackle.

It's a really nice sounding stereo when it works :sigh:

Peace
Norm

Norm, does the car player have one of those "holes" that PC readers/burners have to force eject something like that?

Another reason I don't use labels on cds I burn for the car.

Yeah, never put a CDR you've burned with a adhesive label in a front-load slot player. Big mistake. What happens, if the car heats up and cools off, the label won't stick to the CD that will expand or contract naturally, and the label will "buckle". Makes it almost perfect to get stuck when you try and eject.

If you're not leasing the Subaru, YANK THOSE SPEAKERS. I just bought a Honda Civic 2003, and the speakers certinaly DO have annoying limitations. I can't wait to take those paper poopers OUT!!

Norm: do you know who makes the player? I highly doubt McIntosh makes the entire unit--they may make some of the circuitry or have it made to their specs. I only say that because it sounds to me like there is a cheap volume control in the unit, one that gets dirty and/or oxidizes too easily.

I'm not familiar with the player, but with every @$#(*&ing Sony I've ever had in the car, stuck CDs were a way of life. Their loading mechanisms sucked. Fortunately most of the time there was enough of a bit of CD sticking out that I could pull it from the player. If there is a decent loading slot or door, you MIGHT be able to fish around with a very narrow pair of needle nose pliers, fish around and pull the disc out. But if it is caught on anything delicate, you risd damaging the guts of the player.

The safest way, though, is to take the radio out completely, and remove the cover to see if you can work the disc out of the player. Sounds like the label came apart and adhered to the innards.

This may scare you. but I had this happen in my old Acura. What I did was press eject, the thing started the eject mechanism, and I stuck the blade of my Swiss army knife into the slot  This gave the disc enough pressure to start peeking out. I then grabbed it and NEVER used a stick on labeled CD again.

Use this at your own risk! :D

Hi Norm,

Sounds like it's time to sell the damn car! :D

If the car is still in warranty, they can take the stereo out and open it. I don't know how many Pioneer front-load DVD-Rom drives I've worked on for the PC, but the simple principal is the same.... You may have to have the drive taken apart so (like others have said) you don't risk out of warranty damage to the unit.

Sorry to hear about this, Norm.

Only worry there--the dealers says "You're not supposed to use discs with labels on them", and charges for the removal. Slim chance, but the way dealers are, it doesn't hurt to be prepared. ;)

This family runabout is still up for grabs - it says it has a CD and no mention of any discs stuck in the mechanism :)

Nice ride Potato Man:
Unfortunately, at my size more would be getting stuck in that Diablo than just CD's.
Thanks for everyone's help. I will try a little bit of everything once I get out of here. I'm really pissed cause drive time is unfortunately my best listening time; almost two hours a day. I think it really is the first actual McIntosh car stereo. I mean it was advertised that way and it has that familiar faceplate and logo. I will try to do more research.

Thanks all!
Cheers,
Norm

The CD has been evicted from the player! Tweezers and the eject button was the winning combo. Looks like I will have to listen to Davids Beatles boot at home. The player seems fine. Tried a regular disc and it spun perfectly. I will deal with the crackle and go from there. Thanks for all the help you guys. Radio here sucks pretty bad so I am happy to have my CD's back.
Cheers!

Norm, did you try spraying some old fashioned tuner cleaner on the volume control shaft?

Wow. That's a name I haven't heard in a while. There's a guy who certainly tripped on his well, you know. He had quite a gig here in town for a while but just kept getting into trouble with his mouth. Funny thing: the dude used to go to my gym. I saw him all the time. He was in good shape too. Really into lifting weights.
Nah, I don't miss that guy. I don't listen to anyone unless they play music. Gimme some news some traffic and some sports then shut the hell up and play some music!!. That's why I like WFUV so much.
Hell, I'll send them a check for a hundred bucks once a year and get two CD's and 51 weeks of commercial free music happily. Just wish I could get them in my car. New York City: you are lucky people.
I might check out that XM or whatever you call the satellite radio and I will try that cleaner on the volume control. Thanks

Go listen to XM at a dealer, Norm. It's amazing... I wish I got it, but I decided I have a bigger CD collection I can dupe for the car, so that's my cost in subscription fees.

Glad you plucked that sticky polycarbonate disc from the slot. Ain't always easy!

Anyone that A) puts stick on labels on their cds and B) sticks their original master disc in the car cd player deserves to learn the lesson you just have, Normy. Looks to me like you need to receive the Dr. Prix lecture on the evils of cd labels and car stereos.:p

Aaah, a good "beater" car to take downtown, so you don't have to worry about your GOOD car (like your Chevette) being stolen. :D
