"Heavy Bones" from 1991, a group that included Gary Hoey. Great hard rock with a progressive edge to it.
My guess is that for a really great single LP from a group, it would have to be a project with members from already-established sources, like Blind Faith. Any group that does a good first album will probably try to put out a second, unless the members already have day jobs in other bands. Even the Wilburys and Power Station couldn't resist a second...

Groups
Blind Faith: Blind Faith
Derek & The Dominos: Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs (their only studio album)
Solo artist
Ritchie Valens never had an album before the tragic plane crash on Feb. 2, 1959, "the day the music died". Del-Fi Records released "Ritchie Valens" postmortemly ten days later.

Blind Faith is my favourite.
I've just done a sound comparison of some of the versions of Blind Faith - email me if you are interested at John Buchanan (buchanan@echidna.id.au)

I'm also going with The La's. I saw them live in '91? Hardly anybody in the audience, but a great show!

John,
Why not post your findings here on the forum where everyone can see.
I've got to go with Blind Faith as well, and a band called Frozen Ghost.
Delaney and Bonnie,Lighthouse, Rick Derringer, and several different bands under the synonum of the Jeff Beck Group ie. Truth, Rough And Ready etc.

It's too large a file and includes the Polygram "nude girl" graphics as well as the MoFi cover.

Nailbomb's "Point Blank" back in 1994...it was meant to be a one-off project and it was killer!
They did come up with a live one after that ("Proud To Commit Commercial Suicide") but that just consists of live versions of the songs in "Point Blank".
Now, if you ask which bands blew it after a highly successful first album, you might get a lot more responses....I'm sure we can think of a few ourselves :)

ROCKPILE!!
They were the most hyped group of the late 70's.
Contractual reasons forced the band to release their albums under the names of Dave Edmunds (on Atlantic/Swan Song) and Nick Lowe (on CBS/Columbia). When all prior obligations were completed - they released 1 LP under their TRUE NAME (Rockpile), and it was a smoker!!
The ONLY other similar situation I can recall was those fantastic early Rod Stewart lp's - y'know, the CLASSIC one's - when we all knew that it was really THE FACES being held back for contractual reasons.....

That's what the deluxe version looks like before the plastic slip is removed. See The Who's Live at Leeds Deluxe Edition for a similar presentation, as well as One More From The road by Lynyrd Skynrd (?spelling). The original cover is revealed after the slipcase is removed

Have to go with the Sex Pistols. Still sounds like a bunch of extremely pissed off guys letting it all hang out.
That's rock 'n' roll, ain't it.

Hey, Uncle Al,
As someone who worked at Mercury records during the time period of the "classic" Rod Stewart albums (and you're right to call them classics), Gasoline Alley, Every Picture..., and Never A Dull Moment only contained ONE song each involving the Faces. This was due to contractual crap as well as Stewart wanting his solo albums to have at least a semblance of a different feel from the Faces albums. If you doubt this, listen to the drumming of, for instance, "(I Know) I'm Losing You" on Every Picture verses the other tracks. Clearly different (Kenney Jones verses Mick Waller). I don't know about Smiler; never cared for the album although I think it, too, had only one Faces track.
FYI: did you know the correct title of the first (pre-Faces) Rod Stewart album is not "The Rod Stewart Album" but "Thin"? If you have a copy of the U.S. version of the album, get out a magnifying glass and look at the lower left corner of the album and you can make out the word THIN. Rod said nobody noticed this when the U.S. version was put together and nobody asked him!! The U.K. version, with a totally different cover, was called, of course, An Old Raincoat Never lets You Down.
