Thanks a lot, JohnG. I have been looking for a copy of this film for years.
I understand that Richard Carpenter was livid when he saw it. It'll make a nice addition to my Carpenters collection, too.

What's the background on this movie? Are there legal issues as to why it's "underground" now? Did it have music?
Interesting.

Here's a link (
http://www.google.com/groups?q=Todd+Haynes+superstar&hl=en&lr=&ie=UTF-8&safe=off&selm=960824021741_464295983%40emout15.ma il.aol.com&rnum=17) to some info about the movie from a Usenet post.
I can't imagine it will be any worse than the two made-for-TV movies about The Carpenters I have at home, but what the heck, right?

It plays many of The Carpenters biggest hits on its soundtrack plus other 70's hits like "Love Will Keep Us Together".
That alone could have caused the shutdown of this cool movie.
Plus the fact that Mattel would have sued to stop them from using Barbie Dolls.

It's a very good movie. And quite sympathetic to Karen Carpenter.

Someone has released it on a dvd, though I assume it isn't a "legit" release. For those who are interested who live in the San Francisco Bay Area, check Amoeba or Medium Rare records. I've seen it both places. (I haven't seen the dvd so I don't know how well it was made; for all I know it's a dvd-r of a crummy looking videotape.)

Really sad this never got to many viewers. Although it's partially whimsical in its use in Barbie dolls, it's thoughtful and well done...
See it!

Of course, the magazine Entertainment Weekly would never have let that web address slip into their pages in that top 50 Cult Movies article...now would they...;)
