Anybody see these displays at any shows? Field Emission Display from FETechnologies

If you don't listen to this today, you'll have to fish it out of the archives....

Sounds interesting, even if I don't fully understand the explanation or the advantage of this. Sounds like it is not that far away from beginning production.

there is no watch out for LCDs- LCDs are cheap, and people seem to buy lower and lower quality versions, so why on earth sell something that is more difficult to manufacture?

FED could end up being cheaper and better....? Here's another report.

FED has been around awhile and really isn't anything of a major step change.

LCD keeps getting better and better and cheaper and cheaper.

Personally, I think OLED is more likely to be the next "big thing" in TVs but it still needs a fair amount of development to be practical. I believe that Sony makes the only OLED currently on the market, and it is only an 11" diagonal screen and far too expensive for such a small picture. However, if you are near a Sony demo center, you should check it out. The picture is quite impressive -- it is often characterized as looking through a window rather than looking at a TV -- and the available version isn't even true HDTV! I understand that there are large screen prototypes that are far too expensive to produce commercially, but can actually be rolled up.

Sony must think highly of FED since they're hedging their bets on it by investing 30-somthin' percent in this venture. That makes ya wonder if OLED is what's too expensive...?

OLEDs are definitely the next big thing. I keep hearing that the OLED structure should allow for a "roll up" type television. Won't that be cool? You roll up your TV, slide it into a poster tube, go over to your friend's house for the Super Bowl, unroll the TV and tack it on his wall. When it's done, roll it back up, go home and put it back on your wall.

Now that's a portable TV!. :D

I'll believe roll-up TV's when I see 'em. Sony is betting on two horses here.
