Are we talking about the Cornell Wilde film from the 60's here?

I always get it confused with the Rod Steiger running film.

I'm thinking about the one with the dark haired guy running away from a tribe in africa.

Great film! I need to pick up the Criterion edition (

Mel Gibson's Apocalypto had a similar theme to it.

The Criterion edition is very well done. I only sampled part of the commentary, but it is excellent.
As for Cornell, he was in his 50s when they shot this film, and he looked remarkably fit (this was before Hollywood stars had personal trainers!).
Roger Ebert criticized the movie because a white man outwitted six of the best African hunters from a tribe, but hey, this is basically a fiction movie, with degrees of realism. Supposedly it is based on an original true episode where a white settler/hunter was captured and escaped from the Blackfoot, who pursued after him.
And as an aside, the Blackfoot were supposed to be the fierciest Indian fighters among all North American tribes.

Yes, I saw it several times and I really like it. They don't make them like that anymore :shake: .

I've seen it quite a few times since it always seems to be on a movie channel on those days when I have nothing to do except put the TV on.
It must be good because watching this guy run away from them never get old. Although, I do admit, I was bummed about the "surprise" ending.

a real "man's" kind of movie that they just don't make anymore. The 'baking in the mud' scene got stuck in my head for weeks after I first saw the movie. *shiver*
I would be happy if Hollywood (or anyone else) would start making good adventure movies again.

I'm with you with the 'baking in the mud' scene. Pretty horrific.
What I think makes movies like this special is that they are 100% believable. The "good guy" does not survive by pulling off stunts that would never work in real life. You feel you are there, you could be in that situation, and you really identify with the character since his chances and abilities are not superhuman.
While I do enjoy James Bond and Indiana Jones movies, the stunts are so unbelievable that the entire movie turns "cartoonish".

Mel Gibson's Apocalypto had a similar theme to it.
Interesting parallel. Mel's behavior, politics, and beliefs aside, that was another very good chase movie for the second half.

You too? Thinking about it right now gives me shivers. That whole sequence where they torture them, baking in the mud, the cobras, and the guy tied up, that they stab to death was frightning. It's been so long since I've seen it, I forget why the tribe attacks them, anyone wanna refresh my memory?

I forget why the tribe attacks them?
Because those British guys considered the tribe to be a subhuman species, and treated them accordingly.

Cornell Wilde's character's attitude toward the tribe was commendable though. Which made you want to root for him throughout the film.

The Criterion is pretty good and includes a solid commentary track focusing on many of the unusual issues Wilde ran into shooting 1) on location and 2) as an independent.
