A while back I started to use Total Audio Recorder for recording webcasts and the like to hard disk. It works like a charm. Starts and stops on a dime and allows you to record pretty much anything you hear through your pc speakers. For conference calls and the like it is invaluable.
However, about the same time as I installed it I found out that Exact Audio Copy wouldn't extract and burned audio discs sounded decidedly odd. Remember the discussion we had about how to get EAC working again for me? A little while later, my sound card died.
I tried everything short of reinstalling the whole system. But then after going into the control panel I noticed that TAR had become the default soundcard. After uninstalling TAR I found the system started working again and I can now use EAC to rip discs.
Has anyone else found problems with TAR.
Jeff

From their FAQ:

Total Recorder Driver

Why does Total Recorder need a driver?

If a sound player itself does not provide recording capabilities, the only way of capturing digital sound is through a sound driver.

How can I temporarily disable the Total Recorder driver?

Take the following steps:

From the "Control Panel", select "Multimedia" ("Sound and Multimedia" on Windows Me/2000).

Select the "Audio" tab.

Change your default device for playback and recording from the Total Recorder driver to your original sound board driver.

Can I have the Total Recorder driver active only when I need it?

Yes. Use "Options"-"Settings", "System" tab, and set "Preferred audio devices when Total Recorder isn't active" as "Audio playback and recording devices selected above". This causes the Total Recorder driver to be active only when Total Recorder is active. However, in this mode you must always start Total Recorder before your playback program when recording from "Software".

Hmm.
Reading the FAQ certainly would have helped.
I am sorry there is not a more elegant solution. Jeff

Where does one get TAR? Does it work with Win98SE?...Any minimum requirements?..I don't have much room on this piece of junk I'm using now and forevermore...

It's a pretty compact bit of software. I shouln't think you will have a problem on that box. Jeff
