I was wondering if any members had a taste for psychedelic music? I’m talking about the serious psych music, cool groovey type of stuff like Ultimate Spinach.

I have Ultimate Spinach / ST and Behold and See which is excellent. The best song is “Ballard of the Hip Death Goddess”. Don’t get the third album – it’s a change of pace for them.

I am aware of the Nuggets boxed sets. And the normal, readily available stuff like Jefferson Airplane.

Others that I remember are Poe (not the modern band), Spiral Staircase, Eire Apparent, Genesis (not the famous Genesis) and Food. A friend lent me a cassette tape once. These are hard to get but I did pick up Wilkinson Tri Cycle recently! There is a store in MA that specializes in this type of stuff, too…. Did not recognize too much stuff, though (mostly British).

Anyone know of others to get? Any sources? Any other fans out there?

Hang in there, baby!

Hey Gary!

I assume you've heard the semi-secret XTC outting as "The Dukes of the Stratosphere"?

Wow, scary stuff. Sounds like they got hold of some bad Prozac. :D

Thank you, Gary, for helping me remember the name of this band. It's been bugging me for a long time.

I don't know why I even know them. I think they had one track on a compilation or something, and I read about them in the liner.

HZ, of course I've heard (and have) the XTC album! Good stuff!

Patrick M, Subgenius: Ultimate Spinach is available on Big Beat out of England. Available as an import. Just FYI.

Thanks for the groovy suggestions, Michael and Edge_88! I'll add them to my 'hunt' list!

There are two groups that I'm especially fond of, both are close to Saucer era Pink Floyd

Sweet Smoke a German/Holland communal band which borders on prog. There 1st LP, "Just a Toke" is excellent.

Group 1850 from Holland an exceptionally Trippy band

Gary,

A bunch of "Classic" Psychedelia can be found on Sundazed CDs and vinyl. Check out any of their catalogs for a trip back in time to "that" era. Bob Irwin/Vic Anesini do some nice discs on many of the groups mentioned in previous posts, plus many more! I was pleased with Alexander Spence's Oar CD and The New Colony Six At The River's Edge CD, among others.

Tomita: Pictures! What a classic! I completely forgot about it! If I remember, he also did Holst: The Planets (but it was pulled for copyright violations..... if I remember correctly!) A friend of mine has a copy on vinyl....

Thanks, Lennonfan!

......and then there was FEVER TREE from Houston. They only had one very low charting single: 'San Francisco Girls (Return of the Native)' in the summer of '68, BUT, their album tracks were great! I've got 2 compilations by them, but I need to get one of the See For Miles discs to round everything out.

Be sure to check out Webb Wilder's cover versions of The Electric Prunes I Had Too Much To Dream Last Night, The Small Faces In My Mind's Eye and Music Machine's Talk, Talk . He does a fine job on these 3 songs.

An obscure psychedelic masterpiece from the early 80's is the Spongetones Eloquent Spokesman. Very Beatle-esque and ends abruptly like I Want You. The song's theme is about drug use.

I thought Surrealistic Pillow was just an album title ... was there ever a song with that title, maybe on another album?

My favorite psych music -- nothing too exotic -- would have to include:

The early Pink Floyd singles and Piper at the Gates of Dawn

"Tomorrow Never Knows" by the Beatles

Certain material by the Small Faces and the Move

5000 Spirits, or the Layers of the Onion and The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter by the Incredible String Band

Their Satanic Majesties Request by the Stones

Smiley Smile by the Beach Boys

Forever Changes by Love

... and for more modern variations:

Psonic Psunspot by the Dukes of Stratosphear and Oranges & Lemons by XTC

Some of the Stone Roses' stuff, and maybe one or two Kula Shaker tunes ("Tattva")
