Just got an e-mail from their website. Looks like there's a 5-disc set coming out containing 11 full episodes from their 3rd season. The fifth disc being the Smothered documentary (which is great, btw). :righton:

That price ($69.99) is way too high for a DVD set that is not even a complete season.
I would be interested in complete seasons for about half that price.

Probably a pricey set due to music licenses. They couldn't show the Beatles' promo films when they ran the shows on E. That episode probably won't be on there. :)

I got a note from Time-Life in the mail that the ship date is moved back to August 9th, 2008.

I haven't seen any reruns of these shows since they stopped airing, so I'm very interested. But yes, the price is very high.
I wonder how they'll hold up now? They were considered very 'cutting edge' before that was even a term! So much so, they got kicked off the air in those ultra-conservative days of yore. I'll bet they seem ever-so-tame now.

Are these COMPLETE episodes,or the versions aired on "E" in '93,which cut a few minutes out of every episode,to allow for commenteries before & after the show.--Often,(but not always)-if a band did two songs, the second would be cut out.
...And the shows are TOTALLY dated.VERY topical....

I agree with that but it is a time period that was very important to my life at that time. I am very interested in seeing this DVD set.

They are going in backwards order...
With the last Season Best of coming first, then Season 2 best of, then Season 1.
Don't ask me why they did it that way.

Yeah, it likely will seem "tame" compared to now, but even more likely is that the political humor will seem very dated, and be filled with references that a whole lot of people simply won't understand. A lot of things change in 40 years, and references to various politicians who are long, long gone and some then-famous events will be nearly meaningless to a lot of people, even the ones who lived during that time. My memory sure isn't what it used to be!

I loved this show hen I was a kid.
Never missed it.
But I remember my female history teacher could not stand
the Smothers Brothers and their show,
because they were SO disrespectful of Pres. Johnson !
Seeing the re-runs years later brought back memories,
but like "Laugh-In", it was of its time.
Dated , and not so funny these days.

Seems like any likely buyer of a Smothers Brothers/Laugh-In/Dick Cavett/etc. box set would know full well what they were in for. Are there really people out there who buy season sets for TV shows they know absolutely nothing about?

There will be some.
But you ignored the corollary point I made: how many of us who watched this show 40 years ago will understand/remember some of the more arcane references to people and events that will turn up?
My memory just ain't that good, is yours?

Anyone remember the Honey House?
Up until about a year ago the web site for The Museum of Broadcast Communications had entire episodes of Smothers Brothers that you could watch. One of the episodes I watched had the Honey House skit. It was hilarious.

I can't remember topical stuff from Saturday Night Live reruns. From the 90s. :shake:

I think Pat Paulsen was on Laugh-In.
Pat Paulsen was a regular on the Smothers Brothers, and had his own syndicated show later.

I can barely remember the show as I was very young. Wasn't Pat Paulsen on all the time??Yup.He was "running for president" in '68.The CBS censor insisted he be removed from the shows prior to the election, saying if he was on,the Smos. should have the other canidates on as well.Equal time, you understand.....
There was even an album,"Pat Paulsen For President" on a subsiderary of Mercury.I still see it every once in awhile...

The Smothers Brothers were very funny even when they weren't topical. I had most of their albums on Mercury and played them over and over.
My favorite moment was when, in the middle of a song (Boil That Cabbage Down, I think) Dicky shouted, "Take it, Tommy!" and Tommy replied, "No!" bringing the song to a halt.

Since the Smothers Brothers were often quite irreverent, are/will the DVD's be edited for "political correcteness" or are they left alone?
