Great article!

FYI, if someone broke into my car tonight, here's what they'd get:

CDR of Led Zep I (from Classic Records vinyl)
Crowded House - Together Alone
Foo Fighters - The Color & The Shape
Stone Temple Pilots - No. 4
The Beatles - mono Sgt. Peppers (Dr. Ebbetts)
CDR of Herb Alpert & The Tiajuana Brass - Whipped Cream (original A&M mono)
Supertramp - Crime of the Century (MFSL)
and last but not least:
a box of 30 copies of the self-titled Holy Zoo cd (meant for delivery
to a local record store).

I wonder what they'd think of me? :)

They'd probably say: How is it possible that this guy is so cool? :D They would also say: He must be holding that Supertramp for a friend. :D :D

Hey, are you interested in trading that? ;)

I've also heard the Dr. Ebbetts mono Sgt Pepper. Why can't Apple get stuff like this out?

It is clean with very good dynamic range. I understand it's made from the original Parlaphone LP. It has just a hint of the runout groove too.

Actually it's from the early '80's Japanese vinyl pressing..

...the excellent Dr. Ebbetts mono Sgt Pepper...Well... for the record, all of the Ebbetts cds that I have heard so far exhibit the following defects:
- they're loud and shrill and a bit compressed
- the stereo ones sound louder on the left channel
- every one includes an ugly low-level crackling distortion, which is normally well-hidden but becomes obvious when OOPS'd.

Sheesh, anyone else notice any of this?
Funny how everyone keeps repeating how great they are, but these discs sound like rush jobs, IME. :(

Grant, can you try OOPS'ing your copy just to see if anything is there?

FWIW, the rumour from the UK is that the prolific Dr E is doing some remastering...

I sure hope he gets things right (or at least better) this time around!
At least his heart seems to be in the right place...

Well, that's today's free advice - it's worth every penny! :D
And remember that you read it here first, tucked away in an obscure thread! :)
