After Quint's Indianapolis story, we hear the mournful whale, it was eerie and effective. Then in the DVD 3oth anniversary, it is barely audible. Or changed, somehow . . .
What gives?

Perhaps the remix made it less pronounced. I believe that it wasn't in 5.1 before it came to DVD.

or Spielberg tampered with it . .
and btw, checking out IMDB's "goof" list, judging by the numbers, it seems to be rather very sloppy filmmaking.

The 30th Anniversary DVD includes the original mono soundtrack, doesn't it? Is the "normal" whale sound still there?

Yes, it does and all the "normal" sounds are there.

Do you have all 5.1 channels working, or properly downmixed to whatever your speaker configuration is?

Yep. I confirmed that the mono is there as well. It has to do with the presentation on your system.

The new 5.1 will sound radically different, because the whole soundtrack was remixed from the multi-tracks for the film. If for some reason say, you've got a 2-channel system, and your DVD player is setup for 5.1, the other channels won't be downmixed properly.

Please god , no....

A lot of the sound effects were changed for the 5.1 mix: e.g., telephone rings, gunshots, the "smile-you-son-of-a-bitch" explosion at the end.
The same problem occurs on the SE "Smokey and the Bandit" DVD, which unfortunately, doesn't have the original mono mix.
