I just watched Hannah and Her Sisters for the first time in a long while, and what a film it is. The character development is just phenomenal, along with the acting and script. But these are par for the course with Woody Allen, in my opinion. Some of my other favorites from him include Crimes and Misdemeanors, Another Woman, Manhattan, Love and Death, and the classic Annie Hall. Any fans care to get in on some Woody Allen film discussion action?

"Play It Again, Sam" is one of my favorites.

From the scene in the art museum:
Allan: That's quite a lovely Jackson Pollock, isn't it?
Girl: Yes, it is.
Allan: What does it say to you?
Girl: It restates the negativeness of the universe. The hideous lonely emptiness of existence. Nothingness. The predicament of Man forced to live in a barren, Godless eternity like a tiny flame flickering in an immense void with nothing but waste, horror and degradation, forming a useless bleak straitjacket in a black absurd cosmos.
Allan: What are you doing Saturday night?
Girl: Committing suicide.
Allan: What about Friday night?

And my favorite:
Allan: We're platonic friends. I can't spoil that by coming on. She'll slap my face.
Bogart: I've had my face slapped plenty of times.
Allan: Yeah, but your glasses don't go flying across the room.

"Broadway Danny Rose" is my favorite - maybe favorite film of all time. At least it's a perfect movie to me - so it's just as good as about 9 other perfect films in my book.

Other favorites are (some are obvious of course):

"Bananas"
"Annie Hall"
"Manhattan Murder Mystery"
"Husbands and Wives"
"Mighty Aphrodite"
"Manhattan"
"Crimes and Misdemeanors"

Runners Up:

"Love and Death"
"Take the Money and Run"
"Small Time Crooks"
"Scoop"
"A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy"
"Oedipus Wrecks" (short)

And not great but definitely underrated are "Stardust Memories" and "Shadows and Fog".

I practically have Love and Death and Tiger Lily memorized. I like all the early, funny ones, and Radio Days is a masterpiece.

The first thing I remember seeing with Woody Allen was Take the Money and Run, then Bananas. Those are still fun and wacky. I have fond memories of Annie Hall, Manhattan and Hannah, but haven't watched any of them in years. Crimes and Misdemeanors is good, and I really enjoyed Manhattan Murder Mystery. Also haven't seen Broadway Danny Rose or Purple Rose of Cairo in years, but liked them as well.

Match Point (which I only partly liked) and Scoop (which I liked quite a bit) are encouraging and show that he still has some creative ideas left in him yet. Getting out of NY did him a lot of good.

Bananas
Purple Rose of Cairo
Another Women
Manhattan (Mostly for the Gordon Willis amazing cinematography)
Hanna and her Sisters is good

He reminds me of Van Morrison. He's great but he sure does repeat himself quite a bit

#1 - HUSBANDS AND WIVES

Can't believe I forgot about that one! The scene towards the end, after Jack and Sally have reunited, and they're talking about how they just sweep all their problems and conflicts under the rug, and how well it works for them. Wow. The brutal honesty of that film is amazing. Definitely not for folks who only like Allen's early slapstick style.

My favorite seems to change all the time, but if forced to choose only one, it would be Crimes and Misdemeanors.

Like Jimbo, I think Radio Days is an overlooked masterpiece.
