Seen in Soho last month, from the famous 'Life' photograph of the skyscraper workers in the 1930s. I'll bet seeing the driving down Broadway atop that truck is one of the few things to make New Yorkers do a double take! Bigger version here (

Does anyone have the photo this was based on?

I'm thinking it was the great Margaret Bourke-White who made that photo, but I'm not at all sure. Anyone know?
There's a famous photo of Bourke-White crawling onto one of the gargoyles high on the Chrysler building with her Graflex. That woman had bigger stones than I'll ever have!

Whenever I see that photo I get paranoid -- I don't have many phobias, but I hate heights!
Weren't they building the Empire State building at the time this was taken?
I don't know how they do that.... yikes! I'd be scared being the photographer!

This link:

indicates the photographer is unknown, and is from 1932 and the construction is of the Rockefeller Center.
Thanks, Todd! Mystery solved!

Did anyone watch The Simpsons tonight and catch the reference to this photo at the end of the opening credits? Timely thread, Ere!

Yep, I noticed that too! The "couch shot" in tonight's new episode was a sly visual homage to this photo!

Dang! I missed that on Sunday night, what a coincidence. Thanks, Todd, for the research. I guess when that photo was taken the men were so glad to have a job they were happy to risk their lives for a paycheck. Check out Central Park in the background.

P.S. Did you ever notice how everything come back to the Simpsons one way or another?
