View Full Version : The Sweet
I know there's tons of SWEET available, but many of the individual albums are out of print and have never been pressed on CD in the U.S. ("Give Us A Wink", "Off The Record", etc.).
For Steve: Might make a great 2-for-1 silver disc!
I was listening to the 1992 hits package on Capitol last night. Kinda thin, no bass at all. :(

Well, haven't heard these records... but both records are not their best effort!

I believe "One Way" records did reissue just about all of the major Sweet releases, I saw "Level headed" for $11.00 as a cutout, but I felt that the Polydoor/Reprotuiore (sp) Cds would be the best I would hear, knowing they certainly didn't sound re-heated and crappy. Again too, bonus tracks were available on the imports that have long-stood.
But I'm not even sure if that stuff is available or obtainable anymore. The imports should be. I still have a "budget" RCA singles collection from Germany that still sounds great and takes care of a lot of their bubble-gum/glam singles.
"Level Headed" is certainly a keeper. "Love Is Like Oxygen" isn't the only great song there.
The Sweet catalog was NOT reissued in America.
Only "Level Headed" is currently available in remastered form, and it's the US version of the album. Most of their catalog has never appeared on CD in the US.
The Sweet catalog would be an EXCELLENT project for Steve to undertake.
Sweet imports are VERY popular in the US...especially at record shows.
The German BMG CD's are a massive improvement over the Repitoire issues. Great sound quality.
The Sweet albums were very, very well recorded...especially "Give Us A Wink"...which was recorded at Musicland Studios in Munich by Reinholdt Mack.
The US Sweet albums were all Capitol hatchet-jobs (like The Beatles catalog)....right up to their last LP!
The US version of "Desolation Boulevard" is actually a *compilation* of UK singles and tracks from the UK albums "Fanny Adams" and "Desolation Boulevard.
The US "Give US A Wink" had a bonus track...a re-mix of "Lady Starlight"...which originally appeared on the UK "Desolation Boulevard" (without the obnoxious synths and backing vocals).
I'm not sure if the original US albums would work as "two-fers". The non-LP b-sides HAVE to be included...like on the German CD's...and so do the UK album tracks that were never released in the US.
The Sweet saved their best self-written tunes for single b-sides...they fought very hard to prove themselves and to ditch Chinn and Chapman!
I'm not sure who owns the rights to The Sweet catalog in the US.
Arista (Bell) released everything up to a certain point, and Captiol picked up where they left off.
All of the Arista/Bell material was released as a CD in the US on Razor And Tie...but it was deleted two weeks after release! Legal issues?
The ultimate remastered US Sweet catalog would appear as follows:
- 1st LP (+ early stuff, b-sides, non-US tracks)
- Desolation Bouleveard (+ b-sides, tracks from UK "Fanny Adams" & "DB")
- Give Us A Wink (+ b-sides)
- Off The Record (+ b-sides)
- Level Headed (+ b-sides)
- Cut Above The Rest (+ b-sides)
The Sweet are one of the only bands that are definitely a GULITY PLEASURE of mine.
Musically, I find them incredible.
Lyrically, they were *absoltely atrocious*.
