View Full Version : Ringo 5.1 killed my DVD player

I finally got around to putting the Ringo 5.1 DVD-Audio disc in my Denon 2910 tonight. It played one song, stopped, and now NOTHING will load in my player. I've had this unit for less than 18 months, and it doesn't have'extraordinary mileage on it. Any thoughts? There was NOTHING abnormal about the functioning of this player before I put the Ringo 5.1 disc in. This seems very weird to me.

Maybe Ringo tried to clean the leans and tossed a gob instead...
Seriously, the disc probably had nothing to do with it. And the age of a player has nothing to do with how long the laser lens or assembly will function properly; far as I can tell, that's all luck more than anything else.
So it won't play anything? Did it eject the disc? If so, did you put a lens cleaner in?

No, I haven''t done anything to the player. I tried a CD, a regular DVD, another DVD-A disc, none will load. Very strange.
Thanks for your response.

Unplug the player for a few hours, and try it again. I suspect its internal software just crashed, maybe due to bad authoring on the Ringo CD. Try a known good disc first, and see if it comes back to life once it completely reboots.

Thanks Vidiot. I tried unplugging it for a couple of minutes, but I'll try a longer period of time. I sure appreciate the suggestion. Ringo surely wouldn't want it this way.;)

No, and we want Ringo to be 5.1 DVD inclined.
Yeah there's no telling when they go.
On the old Panasonic DVD player of mine, it'll crash randomly. Fortunately, very rarely. But to sort it, I unplug it and press the power button for several seconds, and leave it unplugged for an hour or so. It works again after that. Could just apply to mine, I don't know if it'd help on yours. Good luck.

When did Ringo release a 5.1 DVD-A? Is this disc legitimate?

I have a 3 year-old mid-priced Pioneer DVD player in the bedroom that crashes about once every six months when it encounters a badly-authored disc. I'm positive it's just the authoring, not the player.
As an engineer at work tells me all the time: "it's a computer... expect less."

The unit was powered down all night (but not unplugged) so I tried it again this morning--same results. I then disconnected the power cord from the back of the unit and let it set for about 4-5 hours. Plugged it in, turned it on, and same results.
What I'm getting is a flashing "loading" on the front of the unit. It flashes "loading" whether there is a disc in it or not. After a minute or two of that, the digital time counter sets to 00 00 00. Again, same results with or without a disc (didn't even attempt the Ringo 5.1 again, tried a Disney movie instead). When it got to 00 00 00 with a disc in it, I hit play, but nothing happened.
I was thinking of replacing the unit anyway, but thought I had plenty of time to choose the next player, and I was going to use the Denon for SACD/DVD-Audio/CD, and as a backup for DVD video. More than anything it's just disappointing that something that I was happy with let me down in such a short period of time.
Thanks for your responses here.

Yes, I was thinking Oppo. The 980H (or something close to that)?

Does the Denon have a formal reset procedure, like many receivers do? Something like "Hold down such-n-such button while pressing XYZ button for 5 seconds".

No. The same thing happened to my 3910, except for dual-layer SACDs, not DVD-As, and I had to get it repaired (for a small fortune). The Ringo plays fine on it.

Yikes, that's scary. (I've got a 3910.)
Even though you say Ringo plays fine on yours, this horror story with the 2910 makes me think twice about playing Ringo 5.1 when it arrives at my home in a few days (it's en route from DeepDiscount.com).
I love my 3910 too much to let one little disc destroy it. :( (I also never play DualDiscs on it for the same reason; I even went to the trouble of getting all the Talking Heads DVDA discs from Europe even though I already own the DualDisc brick.)

Craig(VC).NEVER a problem with the DVD-A (or DVD) side of DualDiscs. The CD sides, however, tend to skip. Be brave, play the Ringo!

And in case something should go wrong, I should send the repair bill to you? ;) Just kidding! :)
I have a few low-cost backup universal players around, but none are hooked up to 5.1 amplifier, just stereo. Since Ringo 5.1 doesn't have a true stereo program, I guess I'll be out of luck unless I want to tempt fate and play it on my Denon 3910. (And no it's not worth it to dismantle/disconnect my current gear and swap in one of those backup players just to hear Ringo in 5.1.)
I sound like I'm griping more than I really am. It's no big deal really. I'll listen to the stereo CD that comes with the package, and if the music sounds good enough to me that I'm craving the 5.1 experience then I'll consider taking a chance to play the DVDA disc.

I'm also passing on the Ringo disc, my 3910 is too valuable to me (its playing the Porcupine Tree DVDA of Lightbulb Sun as I type).

You know the DVD-A has a bonus song? It's a whole :56 seconds long.:)
I never had any problems with any other type of disc until the Ringo 5.1 yesterday.
If you were in my shoes and you bought a new player, would you try to give the Ringo a spin?(it played fine in two channel on another DVD player).

Of course. Worst case, you just take it straight back to the store for replacement. Any reasonable business wouldn't make you send a brand new player in for warranty work.
FWIW, since it's out of warranty (presumably?), why don't you open the player and see if the disc is spinning when you load it. My Panasonic DVD player died in this fashion. The spindle motor just went. At first I could nudge it and it would start up, but that didn't last long. I found that it was a common problem with this particular Panasonic model. Of course, it's possible that none of this is in common with your 2910, but I just figured I'd mention it in case it helped.

Just wanted to say thanks for all your help & input. I've ordered the Oppo tonight, so onward & upward.
I'm a relative newcomer to this wonderful site and think I am definitely "with my peeps" here.;)
