Ironside

OK, first off, I never watched the show when it was on orginally. I watched the last 20 minutes of one episode last night. Here's my question, the dude is confined to a wheelchair. He has somebody drive him around in a Ford van. Last nights show, his driver is in a shootout with the bad guys. One of the bad guys start to make a getaway. Next frame, Ironside is behind the wheel of the van and cuts the bad guy off. What's up with that ??

From memory (I haven't watched the show in decades), the van's driving gear was "handicap adapted" (or whatever phrase was used in the 1970s) so Ironside could drive it.
