Well, boys, I am screwed. I took the advice of some here without absolutely being certain of the facts and I paid the price.

The Denon 1803 receiver that I bought DOES NOT have Analog 5.1 inputs for DVD-A and SACD. It has some weird "Wide Band" digital connector for those that nobody else uses.

So, unless I can find a combo DVd-A / SACD player that uses this wideband output i am screwed.

You know what, yea, i should have done another hours research, but if the big companies think that Multichannel is gonna bail them out they are dead wrong. If an old Audio nut like ME makes a mistake, its WAY TOO complicated for the average person.

A very glum mikey.

CORRECTION!!! the Denon Tech was WRONG!!!!!!!

I looked again, and there hidden all the way in the corner ARE the analog 5.1 jacks!!! YEEEAAAA!!!!!!!!!\\

I called him back and actually wne into another room to look for himself and he verified it. He was REALLY apologetic.

Now, Mikey is Happy!!!

And i get my Paradigm speakers tomorrow!!

Life is good

Mickey, I have the similar 1801 model from a couple of years ago and really like it. You had me worried there for a minute as I thought they changed the inputs/outputs, but it sounds like everything's cool now. You should have no problems with SACD playback. Enjoy!

Thank you Ray!!

yes, it seems all is well now. i got really nervous when the denon Tech told me that the 883/1803 didnt have analog 5.1 inputs, but i found them.

I think I can speak for the rest of the members of this discussion forum: what a relief!
You really have not been having a lot of fun with this av amp. Indeed, I have sometimes wondered wheher you should heed to a greater degree your tag line, Stereo Rules.

Geez Mikey, you freaked me out! I knew that unit had 5.1 inputs, but after reading your post I thought maybe they deleted them!! :eek

Whew! I am glad you found them. The tech must be new............. :(

Me too!!

The tech told me that he "felt shame" by telling me something that wasnt true!! I couldnt be mad at him after that!!

I hooked up my JBLs to the Denon. Sounds great, and the Dolby Prologic 2 is awesome.

I'm hoping to trst out a Quad Lp (the best of Bread) to hear how THAT sounds. I'm told that quad Lps, except for SQs play back in surround on PL2 systems, which excites me no end!!

Mikey,

Best of Bread is a CD-4 LP. That requires a demodulator, not a decoder. To hear that in quad, you need a shibata stylus that goes to 50 KHz and a CD-4 demodulator. Best get a DTS conversion of that one.

The DPLII gets closest to the Sansui QS system, so if you have any QS LPs, they should decode fairly well (Steely Dan, Joe Walsh, Jim Croce, BB King, etc.). You will get mixed results with an SQ LP.

Good luck and have fun!

Which Paradigms? I have a pair of the 100's, and I'm considering another set to set me up for surround (and thereby getting away with no sub).

I love my Paradigms, but I'll tell ya, they (the 100's) are power sponges. I've even had a 380 watt Rotel amp go into safty shut off while playing particularly dense music ("Prodogy presents the Ditchchamber Sessions" -great album, btw.)

CD-4 disks often sound great played back with a Dyna Quad, PL or PLII setup. Give it a try.

Richard.

I'm going to Richard. I only own two Quad LPs, Elvis Aloha Via Satellite and The Best of Bread. I'm trying to find them now.

I'll let everyone know what they sound like.

Man, you scared me for a minute. I know that all Denon receivers have 5.1 analog inputs in the Dolby Digital age.

Even my now 5 year old Denon 3300 has the inputs.

Glad to see it was a mistake and you can now enjoy Hi-Rez sound.
